Third gear blown?

So since I got my car boosting hard again this weekend, I've been heavy on the throttle. The car hauled some serious ass.

Today while driving it, I pulled 2nd gear to 6K rpm, shifted into third, and about a second later, all hell broke loose. It seems like I shattered 3rd gear.

I was able to drive the car home by using 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th. It laughed at me when I tried to put it into 3rd.

While I was able to drive in anything but 3rd gear, it still made a horrible grinding noise the entire time. I'm guessing that it was just 3rd gear trying to be interlocked and hating life?

Anyway, just wanted some input from people more experienced with the trans.

My current plans are to at minimum replace 3rd gear with an MSP gear, the synchro, and maybe the shift fork, and throw a Quaife LSD in there while I'm at it. I'm also considering a new clutch. My Spec holds great, but it's a tad harsh for the bumper to bumper traffic.

IIRC, focus has sheared the teeth off of 2 different 3rd gears completely, and they both happened while the clutch was fully engaged... sounds a bit weak. I know MPnick is looking into heavy duty gears as well, so you may want to look at that thread if you havent already.

Yeah, i just checked it out. I need this stuff w/ the quickness though.

best of luck figuring out a good solution. Seems like we'll all have to look at this problem soon enough :( (those running high HP)

gee 3rd gear seams to be popular! a guy in oz running quite a few psi recently lost 3rd gear as well pretty much doing what you were doing kooldino

Can you find out what oil he was using ?

To the guys that shattered a gear in the past - did it make horrible grinding noises when you drove it in any other gear as well?

the aussie was using top of the line syntrx with moly additive (never heard of this brand b4). now uses royal purple

I know Pat's (linux) did....

I'm hopin my redline heavyweight/lightweight shockproof combo will stick to the gears well enough to save my ass. I know it sticks to whatever it touches really well...
that and I already ave the upgraded 3rd shift fork.

So did linux only have to repalce the 3rd gear in his? Or were the other gears damaged from the shards of metal?

So did I. Just ordered a used one from an 03 Protege. :) I still want the limited slip though...

List of stuff for me to buy (please suggest anything else I might need).
-Quaife LSD - P/N ???
-Other Quaife related hardware???
-Speedo gear? Which?
-Tranny axle seals
-Redline Shockproof(?) trans fluid
-Maybe a different clutch if someone offers to buy my Spec 6 puck?
