Thinking about new SUB !!!

Ok, here is my story.
I had my stock kenwood sub stock replaced 2 times. The last time Dealer installed me a Cervin Wega 400w SUB, but it also blews 2 times... second time was just last weekend !!! So Im kind of sick of having my sub always blowing on me. Im thinking about getting a new one on my own and power it up with the stock amp. Another think is that my sub always rattled in stock location. Its not the rear deck, I can assure you !!! Its more likely the wires in the box or something like that. If any of you had this problem please let me know :) !!!
For the rest, if I put a 4ohms 8" do I have to change anything else, like amp location (inverted) or power wire (I think stock is 10gauge) !? Same for a 10" !?

thanks :)

* Quick question, to max the stock amp, the radio must send a signal to the amp that would produce an output higher than 250W !???

i have a jl 8w3v2 at 4 ohms. had it for a few months. no problems i love it. and it is hot as balls here and my amp has yet to cut off

Is your amp at stock location and inverted ?

I just ordered a Rockford fosgate punch stage 2 P28S4. They sent me one with a damaged cone though, so I'm waiting on a replacement. A few other members have used them and say it's pretty good. Fits the stock location. Much cheaper than the 8w3v2

Some people also get the JL W0, which is the lower end JL, but supposedly still better than the stock kenwood I guess.

Is the rockford P28S4 a direct fit in the stock box ? Is the grill also still fit ?
As for the power and ground wires, some people says that when you move from stock 8ohm to 4ohm, it is better to upgrade the wires to 8 gauge or better even with the stock amp! Is it true ?

thanks

Read H-town speed's posts here. He explains the fit, and has pics, etc.

Bump for my question :) !!!

Also, with a 10", what RMS level should I not go over with the stock ampli !? 250, 300 ?

thanks

RMS levels vary from manufactor to manufactor soo much they are mostly useless. The better number to look at would be the SPL number. Since the stock amp is small the more decibels per watt the better. Typically the top speakers from good companies take alot of watts to play so would be a bad choice for the stock amp. Entry or mid-level speakers would be the best choice if you are going with Rockford, J.L., Kicker, ect..
The power wire has a fuse on it soo I wouldn't mess with changing the wire unless you blow the fuse by the battery. Car stereo people tend to go overboard with the wiring IMHO. I have a bridged 1000 watt RMS Adcom amp running a SVS sub in my house plus other amps running the rest of my theater. It's all run by the 12 ga. electrical wires in my house. Maybe the AC versu DC has something to do with it. I just can't believe a short run in car needs such large wire. People running 0 ga. wire in their cars makes me laugh.

Anyone try a Kicker 05CVR8-4 Comp VR 8" Component Subwoofer Dual 4 ohm or 2 ohm?? will it fit in the factory setup with the stock amp?

Cool thanks for all the infos its grandly appreciated. Im not looking for a top class subwoofer, but at least something better than what we have stock. Our amp is 125rms (max 250) and Im currently looking for a 10" in this range. These are the subs currently on ly list:

- Rockford Fosgate PUNCH P210S4 (200rms)
- Soundstream XS-10 (250rms)
- Blaupunkt PCwb1000 (200rms)

The Blaupunkt was propsed to me by a seller today! He said it was cheap but a good quality cost! Anybody tried this sub from Blaupunkt? As for the others, they could be powered by the stock amp could they?

thanks

So im assuming these specs wouldn't really be to decent using the stock amp...

Size 8" (21.6cm)
4 Ohm Dual Voice Coil
400 Watts Peak/200 Watts RMS
Sensitivity 83.1dB 1w/1m
Frequency Response 30-500 Hz
Mounting Depth 4-5/16" (11.0 cm)
Mounting Diameter 7-1/16" (17.9 cm)
Sealed Box Volume .40 cu ft Min (11.3 liters) - 1.8 cu ft Max (51.0 liters)
Vented Box Volume .8 cu ft Min (22.7 liters) - 1.2 cu ft Max (34.0 liters)

Yeah that's a really low sensitivity. Plus it's a dual 4 ohm which means you would have to wire it at 8 ohm's. The stock amp can't handle running at 2 ohm's. I have a dual 4 ohm right now that I ran off the stock amp for a short time. It sounded better than the stock sub. It really sounded good now that I've got an amp with more power. What sub are these stats for? With a mono sub amp you could wire it at 2 ohm's and it would be a good match for something like the smallest Alpine sub amp using the stock sub enclosure.

That Blaupunkt has a list price of only $60. I wouldn't pay more than $30 for a used one. I have never heard it but it probably is going to be boomy. If you like rap it might work out. If your looking for something punchy it might not be the best choice. I would guess it is a step down from the stock Kenwood although it would play louder since it is 4 Ohm's, it all depends what you are looking for.

The soundstream is a dual 4 Ohm which isn't a very good match for the stock amp. You would have to run it at 8 Ohm like the stock Kenwood. It's not going to be much of a step up from the stocker either.

The Rockford is the best of the 3. Although it has a sensitivey of 85 db which means it needs more power than other subs to play at the same volume.

Something like the Infinity Reference 1040 might be a better a choice it's rated at 90 db sensitivity (the bigger the number the better) and it has a rubber surround rather than foam like the Fosgate.

For a little bit more I saw a killer deal on a MB Quartz at Crutchfield.com it's the PWE 252. It's a dual 2 Ohm so it can be wired for 4 Ohm now and it could be cahnged to 1 Ohm if you ever got a dedicated sub amp. It's $130 which is like $170 off!! Here is a picture of it.

Thanks again for all the infos, Im always learning when I read you :) !!! I bought my new sub this afternoon. The seller, which I know, made me listen to the soundstream, but like you said, its a dual coil, so its not the perfect match for the stock amp. He then plugged a package he had, a Rockford P210S4 with its vented box (PL2-110) and its was on sale at 259.99$ (CAN) so I couldnt resist. I plugged it when I came back home and damn what a difference. With the stock 8", I used to set NF around +3, but now even way lower at -7 its much better :D !!! The bass is much clearer, much deeper and the rattle are also gone ;) !!! I think the box helps a lot because one of my friend have the same sub but with a sealed box and it doesnt play as good as mine. Anyway, Im very happy right now with my new acquisition.

Here is a pic of the box with the sub:

My audio guy actually reccomended the w0 over the w2, he said it better matched the amp's power output....and it was much cheaper!

Congrats on the new sub. Sounds like you got a good deal. It's hard to go wrong when the speaker manufactor makes the speaker box. They always sound better. With the box ported it's going to play louder than non-ported which has to help the amp out.
Glad to hear your rattle is finally gone. Now with more bass you can create new ones in the interior ;)

Its for a kicker O5CVR8-4.

Maybe this one would be a better match instead....

Kicker 05C8-8 Comp 8" Component Subwoofer 8 Ohm

Size 8" (21.6cm)
8 Ohm Dual Voice Coil
200 Watts Peak/100 Watts RMS
Sensitivity 85.6dB 1w/1m
Frequency Response 30-500 Hz
Mounting Depth 4" (10.2 cm)
Mounting Diameter 7-1/16" (18.0 cm)
Sealed Box Volume .5 cu ft Min (14.2 liters) - 1.2 cu ft Max (34.0 liters)
Vented Box Volume .66 cu ft Min (18.7 liters) - 1.2 cu ft Max (34.0 liters)

but it think this one would be under the kenwood?!?

Well here's the site I've been looking at for these.....
