The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Evan I don't need to see anymore wires -_-

I made my Cinci trip without incident Friday, despite the miata still making an awesome humming noise and vibration I can't narrow down. Wheel bearings have no play, I got the tires road force balanced, it's aligned, and I replaced the diff and tranny fluid. Sounds like its coming from the rear and becomes audible around 35mph. Around 70-75 it becomes very apparent and is not a 100% constant rolling noise. More like a second long hum, very short pause and then hums again. Over and over. It does it in or out of gear. Originally discounted driveshaft related problems but then realized the driveshaft still spins with the rear wheels/diff....
Thoughts?

Saturday did some running around, rivals got mounted, went to a charity shooting range outing and a bike ride all in one... Sunday went up to the invasion... In the rain.

My brother had something similar and it ended up being the bearings in the rear-end housing for the ring & pinion.

I have no speculation as to your problem Jess, but I'm jealous of your Rivals. I will be ordering a set after I get back from vacation.

Hmmmm that is interesting. Did his seize up or what happened? That sucks, it only has 96k on it lol.

Also check the pinion angles from the transmission and diff. Even 0.5 degrees off could cause your noise.

Welp got a flat on the way to the meet in columbus on sunday.

(back story = back when the hurricane sandy came through in November, roofs were getting blown off & such. I picked up a roofers staple in my right rear tire. Took it to my buddies shop in Lorain to patch it. While they were patching it, i had them throw the winter set (stockers) on. Got the tire back on & put them into the basement for winter. Come a week ago today, i put the summers back on. The night before i just pump all the tires up to around 45psi, max is 51psi. I get home & check tire pressures. All were fine except the one that had the patch. I pumped it back up & watched it everyday till sunday morning. I make it all the way to ashland & wait for the caravan to show up. Leave with the caravan, get on to 71 south & bing bing bing, my tpms light comes on. I'm picturing in my head all the scenarios, should i make it to c-bus or pull over? I make some phone calls & find out that 1 person in our caravan has a jack, but we're not sure if it will pick up the 7 as it weighs a lot more than the cars in the caravan. Coming up on exit 140 & the car is pulling pretty hard to the right. I make the decision & get off at the gas station to get under the shelter to change the tire. Boy i'm glad i did. I would have only made it a few more miles before i was completely flat. Since i didn't trust the flat repair completely, i put 1 of my winter wheels in the car. Swapped that puppy on & was good to go.)

So today, i make an appointment to go to my tire place & do another flat repair. They couldn't find where it was leaking from at first. The whole tire was covered in their soapy mix & no leak. They pop the tire off & still couldn't find anything. Apon a closer look, they find a little pin hole leak which had a sliver of metal in it. They patch her up and put the wheel back on the car. I drive home to pick up the wife for her doctors appointment & drive back basically across the street from the tire place. On the way to her appointment, my tpms light comes back on. They close at 7 & it was 6:45! I quickly call them & say i need them to put the other tire on the car as i'm getting another flat. They were cool & said sure thing. Drop the wife off & head down the road to the shop.

I then call discount tire direct & explain the situation. They say no problem & ship me out a new tire, (should be here by Wednesday) & just pay $20 for a new warranty on the new tire & i'm essentially good to go. I just need to pay mounting & balancing on the new tire & all will be good again. I've had to use their warranty service a few times over the years & i haven't been disappointed. Their prices are pretty comparable to tire rack & they'll match them too. Sucks i have to make another trip to the tire place, but at least everything should good for awhile.

What irritates me the most is that these tires have less than 6,000 miles on them. Argh! Oh well, at least i get a brand spanking new tire out of the deal.

I've looking at one of those for my mom & sister. I can't really find one in our price range, but i can't really find too many issues people have with them

unless it has a turbo, lol

the 2.0 & 2.3 duratecs are pretty much bullet proof for stock purposes. They're ok for modding too, just kinda takes the reliability down a few notches.
