The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Quick question. If I don't have my OEM steering wheel with airbag in do I need a harness? If so I might have to keep it around until then.

I could speculate, but you should probably email Jason at Auto Interests to get a solid answer on that one. They don't have any information, that I can find, on their website about what rules they follow.

No you can use any steering wheel you want. And anyone with a harness should have the airbag disconnected or fuse pulled.

Edit: good call Will. They might have some strange rules so best to check with them.

+1. That is something I did not know to do when I first installed my harnesses and seats.

Open for flaming here but why do you need to disconnect the air bag with a harness?

Is Pablo going to be bringing his new car? Test and tune eh?

I haz to change rear springs, drive shafts, wheel bearings and have it aligned. That will all be easier when I actually pick it up :)

I'll sign up after I earn some money this weekend, and convince my boss to give me a couple more days off...

Bill can correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it the airbag is a supplemental restraint system that is designed to work in conjunction with the seat belt to slow the forward motion of the body that is allowed by the stock 3 point seat belt. Harnesses when properly installed and worn will offer a great deal less forward movement of the body in the event of an impact.

The designers of the OE safety system (seat, belt, airbag(s)) take all of the information they have available to be able to blow the airbag during an impact to provide the safest environment they can. When you start changing pieces of this system you change what is expected to happen to the body during a collision. For example, your head could be in a different place than it would if you were wearing a OE 3 point belt (due to less movement of the body) and the airbag could strike you in a place that it would do more harm than good.

Jon, you don't think you'll be done by June? No rush of course, but that's 5 months away. Even my slow ass should be done by then. haha
Yeah, unfortunatelly it's not going to be until last Summer at the absolute earliest! I still don't have my exhaust manifold (so no exhaust), I won't be able to do any fiberglass work until late Spring (so no fan shroud), and even once everything's put together I'll still need to break in the engine for like 2,000 miles (new bearings and stuff) :(

Blasphemy! It's stock? It won't scare ya. If anything if you take a corner too fast it will just understeeeeeeer. I had a ton of fun in the 2. Reid (?) Kryder of Kryder Racing took mine around Nelson and said it was a great car, just needed a slightly stiffer suspension. It really was a blast on the track :)
Bone stock. I've wanted to play with it for a while but I keep telling myself all time/money goes to the RX-7. The rear end wobbles too much for my liking. I feel like snap oversteer will turn into snap oversteer + rollover in the 2. But if your's did well fairly stock maybe I'll be able to convince myself. I feel like I should at least upgrade the front pads to HPS's or something though. Maybe I'd be able to sneak in the Corksport rear bar... DAMNIT!

I do have more vacation than I know what to do with this year so maybe a week at Mid-Ohio is a good idea.

What Will said is part of it, but the more practical reason for it is that in most crashes you wind up with a torn up dash, smashed windshield, maybe hurt thumbs and the driver doesn't get anywhere near the airbag. I've seen offs where the airbag damage is much worse than the actual crash damage. With a properly installed and worn harness, you should never get anywhere near hitting your head or torso on the steering wheel.

I traded mine in with the R4S on it I believe. I have a set of front OEM pads with 2k if anyone ever needs them.

I highly doubt you'd be able to snap oversteer that thing stock unless you REALLY messed up. I never got anything but understeer when pushing it hard. After the bar, it was much more enjoyable and neutral. With that being said, if you were close to the limit and pushed harder, the rear would step out. Wasn't hard to catch, and I caught it twice around 50 mph and a few times around 40. Now, at 70+ it maybe a different story but I never noticed anything odd in the kink at Nelson with the 2. I was more worried about the Miata in the kink, and both were going about the same speed!

Thank you Evan for starting the other thread.

I am checking into the airbag/harness thing but I ran the 90 miata with rollbar (you need it for these events) with stock belts and non airbag wheel.

Stock belts/no airbag allowed. I'll also update the other thread with some questions that have been asked
