The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

i was thinking rockign it as is, but we could make the slammed thread with that too

it was an office inbetween the audi and vw section. i started at the porsches and worked my way over, i was done looking just seeing if you were there at that point.

Was it a dark-skinned guy with a beard, or was it a tall lanky guy in the first desk by the door? Sorry I miss ya dude.

Can anyone reccomend a good website for used motors? Specifically, the KL and a 5speed tranny? Thank you kindly. :)

I'd go on ProbeTalk and try to find someone local. ;) or just get a beater pgt/626/mx6 on craigslist that got rear-ended or something.

Which motor are you looking for? KL-DE, ZE, or G4?

Which is which again? The ZE is JDM and the G4 has the lightweight crank, right?

I thought about a junkyard or local cat but a lot of online sites have a warranty. I'm not looking to buy a beat up motor from a 17 year old kid who has his car all riced out and says "Never raced or driven hard." Those crack me up.

I should just have you come over sometime and school me in the ways of the KL.

ebay! are you looking jdm or just whatever?

I just did some quick research because I wanted some info on these and the BP engines...

KL-DE is US spec
KL-ZE is JDM with about 30 additional HP
KL-G4 has some sort of special crank

Personally, a KL-ZE would be sweet! I thought I had a website at one point in which you could buy one-let me dig it up for you if I can. Before the MS3 came along, I considered KL-ZE swapping a MX-3...

Edit: If I am wrong here, let me know. I have no experience with these engines, nor have I ever owned or driven or worked on one!

Thanks for the info, Chipmunk. I guess I should've posted my first question in my build thread. I'll go over there now.

that makes since, the fs-de (120hp) is the us protege motor and the fs-ze (170hp) is the jdm motor from what i've read. n/a hp

yeah...in the 626 and stuff the KL-DE makes 170 I think....the japanese KL-ZE makes almost 200bhp

WES where are you?!

The main difference between the FS-DE and ZE are the higher comp pistons, more aggressive cams, and perhaps one other difference besides the ECU, which is where the majority of the extra power is made. The problem is, no one has really been successful in getting it to all work together (mainly because the a-spec wiring harness is different than the j-spec). There are maybe 2-3 people that have done it, but they all said it wasn't worth the work. It does look promising, though: the power of the MSP without the turbo headache.. But in reality, it's not so easy.

Evan, I think some guys get KLZE's from TigerJDM or whatever that place is called. I think it's in Canada. The thing that makes me a little leery is that they have pictures of rows and rows of engines just sitting, perhaps indefinitely, until someone buys them. The warrantee is nice, but I'm sure as you know, sometimes getting a company to honor it is more hassle than it's worth.

If you're going to use an engine importer, make sure to have them take off the valve covers and check the stamped numbers and stuff on the cams to make sure you're getting the engine you're paying for. I forget what letters are which engine, but there's a difference. And then it gets even more confusing when some of the KLZE's had curved neck intake manis, or the long neck intake mani, and then the Milly motor was different, and it gets to be a mess.

Here's a quick run-down of the differences between the motors, although it's not complete. What's worse is that each engine has its advantages, and they're all different, so to get the best motor, you have to build one with parts from all three...

So there, Evan, I made another informative post. I think I'm up to two now!

I like the thumbs up...was that to the camera or another car? That is epic!

Also, I don't have gauges---what is the one on the far left of the triple pod? Does it flicker readings all the time? That would distract me so bad!

I didn't open the vid back up, but just as a guess I would venture to say it's an A/F gauge.

Thanks! The thumbs up was to the poor corner worker that saw my slide. She had the yellow in hand ready to let it fly. The gauges left to right are: AEM Wide band Air Fuel Ratio, Oil Pressure, and Oil Temp. The flickering is because of the video camera, it does not do that in real life.
