The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Lol I didn't mean for people to have a full blown response to how I want to approach getting some seat time. I'm doing things the way that I want to do them. I ask questions when I want advice but otherwise, I could kinda care less if someone doesn't agree with the fact that I'm buying all this s*** before getting in the track. At the end of the day, if I do my first Autocross and get beat by a stock Honda Odyssey, I really don't care. I'm going to learn on my own time and at my own pace.

phen, you and josh have basically said the same thing over the last page or 2, yours was just a bit more detailed haha

to alot of us, the beauty of racing is in the fact that at its most basic essence is nothing more than a "run what ya brung" kind of deal... it doesnt matter if your car is brand new or 50 years old, heavily modded or bone stock, the fun is in getting out on the track and racing

like they said, if you want to race, go race, if you want to build then race do that, but stop talking about how you are building it for the track, yet havent partaken in any sort of seat time.... ive said it before, i dont have what i could call alot of seat time (still more than alot of the guys building cars for the track) and at this point am not in a position to really want to flog/beat the s*** out of my only car on tracks and/or autocross courses (cant risk totalling/blowing a motor etc and having no car while still owing on it as well)... once shes paid off thats likely a different story but ill approach that later when the time presents itself

i think what is trying to be said is this...
we are all for people racing, we are all for people building cars, but dont act like youve done anything when youve built a car and say its for racing, yet have very little seat time... the attitude thats been projected for the last year or 2 in this thread seems to be that of "you gotta build the car, before you can race" and thats really rubbed some people the wrong way... to keep this already long post as short as i can... Put up or Shut up

My last word to the wise (do the wise really need a word? It's the unwise isn't it?) on this topic:

Don't put a car on track that you can't afford to write off right now. Today. If you stuff it, can you get to work on Monday? Can you afford to fix it or get it fixed? Because if you can't afford that now, you probably won't be able to afford wadding it up on track either.

That's one huge advantage autocross has. Yes, there are chances to damage cars there too (hell we had a guy tear to rear bumper off his Mustang this weekend doing something stupid) but chances of it are so, SO low.

Keep in mind, some of us actually like working on cars and building them. That's half the fun.

**DISCLAIMER** i will be saying "you" but it does not directly mean any specific person

no one has any issue with you or any other person building a car, what does get annoying and rub people the wrong way is when you constantly say you are "building it for the track" all the time...

thats where this is all stemming from, no problems if you want to build the car completely then track... the problem is saying you are building it to track but have no knowledge of whats good and bad on said car in track situations

That isn't what I meant at all. I like working on cars. We all like working on them in some fashion. We all are personalizing our cars and building them. My point is build the car for what you like and what you want. Afterall, it's your car right? You have said it before... building it is the passion... Sure, I can dig that. That's an awesome mindset. But... no one ever says "I'm building this for what I want." It's always track track track. That's all anyone ever talks about anymore. But... 1/10th of the people who talk about it actually do it.

There's my beef. Build your cars, have fun! It just kinda sounds poseur to say you're building for track time, and it really doesn't happen.

I dunno... **** it, I'm over it. Back to being quiet and not posting.

Sweet baby Jesus. So touchy up in herr. Ivan, let's do a couple auto-x'es this year, keep the track/auto-x chat in our build threads and get some frozen yogurt with Josh soon.

Ya know what? **** that. I say talk about track stuff in here too. If people don't like it, then get over it. We all are car enthusiasts and like modding cars or else we wouldn't be in here. It's funny the two guys who don't track their cars or plan to get the most upset when the "track" issue is brought up. Get over it. There will be 3 pages of talk about beer and you don't hear me bitching do ya?

I'm tired of tip-toeing around and the drama. Man the **** up. I am. Now let's all get some frozen yogurt! :)

Ok one more post. I don't know about others but I'm building my car to be exactly what I want it to be. I want to get on the track (whether that be Autocross or road course or both) to see how good or bad I am and to learn how to drive better. I don't want to just take my car out on the course because I don't want to have to buy new summer tires, new standard pads etc. It is just the way that I want to do it. If you think that's silly or stupid, then that's fine. If you say so, that's fine too. There are people whose opinion I care about and those whose opinion I don't. I give my opinion in threads even when I know the people don't care about it.

I agree with Amaff's post about not doing track days unless you're completely comfortable with everything. When I feel comfortable about doing it, I will (giggity).

I agree with Phen's last comment, my mind set has changed (even if my posts don't reflect it, nobody has called me out on it yet). I'm no longer doing stuff to get it on track but because I like how the car ends up. I thought that the MSM had plenty of power stock, but after doing the CAI and DP I've come to enjoy it a lot more, and want a little more. I still want to get on track, but I'm doing other stuff because I like the results. Autox is giving me my fix and is helping me drive the car faster, I really enjoy it on the street without being a jackass (most of the time).

And I don't think people are butt hurt, we just keep some stuff to ourselves and then it comes out all of a sudden. I miss Phenda's smartass comments :(

No one disagrees with that (s***, didn't I say I wasn't going to post anymore about this?). See also: my build thread. The one where every few weekends, the car is at an autocross as I gradually improve it over time. It won't ever be "done". I LOVE wrenching on my cars. But every once in a while you've gotta say "FILDI!" (**** it let's do it) and get out there.

I wasn't really talking about you, aMaff. Just that some people, Phen in particular, got burnt out on wrenching so that was a polite reminder that a few of us still like buying parts and wrenching on them. Honestly, that's 75% of the fun I get with my P5 is doing parts research, buying them and installing.

But I personally didn't want to auto-x my P5 with stock 220k mile struts and who-knows-what-brand lowering springs. But after this alignment this weekend I'll join the "FILDI" group. :)

i still have more seat time than you b****, what the **** does that say about you?

on that bombshell im out, it was nice knowing all of you, maybe ill see you around at different events but im tired of this...

Make sure you send your results in to Mazdaspeed Motorsports and join their program! its worth it even if you dont buy anything. lol

This x1000. I actually just got a reminder that I needed to update mine, and did it this morning. The nice thing is they take online event results now, so you can just put the URL of where the results are onto the form and you're good.

what the hell just happened in here? I took my mostly stock 2 to three track days. First, totally stock but with a rear bar. Second, same setup but with Koseis/star specs and springs. Third, 15x9s and R1Rs and springs. I also took the modded Neon to 2 track days and had s*** tons of fun messing with a mostly stock Honda Fit.

I've posted the website of the group I go with multiple times (autointerests.com), and I don't think the prices are unreasonable at all (a little more than a funday at Nelson but usually with more hours to run and lunch included)......... Yet no one expresses interest. I assume this is because they either don't want to wad their car up (valid point), don't want to spend the money (but you can spend it on mods..), go with another group, or just don't have an interest in "racing" (even though it's not, it's point to pass driver education technically--you're just finding the limit of your car).

Building a car for the track is OK I guess. That's pretty much what my Miata will be set up for to an extent. I never got a chance to go "racing" with it stock so I plan on taking the 90 I just picked up on track a few times. I know it will be a totally different animal but I still think it will help.

If anyone wants to go on track and has a helmet, PM me. You can ride along with me or drive the Miata (we pay per car, not per head). I'm not incredibly concerned about wadding up a 90 Miata lol. Moreso the 2 though.

Also, if anyone wants a really good deal I have 2 spots for the Gingerman track day memorial day weekend, just PM me. Much better pricing than the website has (friends/family discount).

Speaking of seat time, I'm doing a DE with NNJR PCA at Mid-Ohio this weekend :D

I personally value track time over modding given the choice (and by choice I mean not having enough money for both ;) ). Not everyone has to feel the same way though jeez.

Edit: I'm interested in the Auto Interests stuff just for the record :D
