The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

Question for all the tire experts on here....hehe

How much air pressure loss is acceptable? A few of my tires have needed filled up every other week or so, they get down to 22-25 psi. I guess it started when it got cold out, but I'm also worried that these tires are aging out. They still have half the tread left, and aren't wearing improperly, but they're over 4 years old and you can certainly tell their age when you look at them.

It's normal to lose 1-2 lbs per month, plus temp can make a difference. Dropping 5-10 lbs a week or so is pretty high. Might want to have them looked at. My old Bridgestones were on their last leg when I traded in the Protege. There was still decent tread, but lots of small cracks on the side walls.

I'm not a tire expert but when I was shopping for tires for the probe, I did a bit of research on used tires.

When you say they are showing their age, what do you mean? Can you see cracks on the sidewall? Are they large or just a bunch of tiny little ones all around the sidewall? The pressure will drop quite a bit when it gets cold and with how quickly it went from 75 to 25 lately, it isn't too far fetched for them to drop 5 psi. You also naturally lose around 1 psi per month regardless of weather.

If you're setting them to ~30 when you fill them up, then they're loosing too much air. It might be that they're old, but it would be a good idea to take them off the wheel, clean the inside of the rim and install a new valve stem. I had that happen last year when I got the saturn wheels for the MSM, they were loosing a lot of air. I had Monro do what I just mentioned and they were fine.

I usually do 32-33 psi on fill up...

And yea, showing their age means little cracks on the sidewall, and just the overall condition of the rubber. Like, if you've ever bought used tires, you can definitely tell they're used. lol

I have Prosport gauges and they've been acting up lately, my temp gauge goes crazy legitimately. Not sure what it is. My connections are all good and tight, all I have left to check is the ground but I don't see how it could be loose with the big ass screw I used.

Previous owner installed them. I did an oil change yesterday and pulled the oil sensors while i had the filter off to check (they are tapped into the spin on filter conversion. Everything looked good. All connections tight, no exposed wiring or anything. As far as the boost gauge, inside the car temp has no effect. However if its above 50 outside it usually works. Theres a little electrical unit for it mounted up near my BPV.

when I bought mps I used tires that I had back in high school (2001) and used them in 2009 with no issues at all, some tires age a lot faster than others depending on road conditions and use. The small cracks that you see are usually in the outer layer of the tire and don't usually lose air unless they are corded. Usually looking that much air and having good tread on old tires has to deal with the sidewalls and the bead that sits in the wheel or bad valve stems. I would check the valve stems first. those are the cheaper of the 2 to replace.

4 years is about middle-age for a tire, no where near "old". If it was 7 or 8 years old, I'd say replace them if you can just as a safety issue. As cold as it has been getting, it's *probably* just the temperature. Just keep an eye on it and you shouldn't have an issue.

That was my hope too. I'd hate to have to replace them with SO much life left.

They're Goodyear Assurances', the receipt from the original owner says they're 60K mi tires, but only have 30-35K on them in these 4 years.

So I get in the car to go to work, press the clutch pedal to start it and hear this horrible cracking sound. Pull the car out of the garage to find this sitting on the floor.

I'm guessing it's some spring for the clutch pedal, right?

Let me know what you come up with. I forgot to mention, while the engine and oil temps are low, my boost gauge works fine and the oil temp gauge sweeps from 100 to 300 degrees non-stop, once oil temp gets to normal temp, then the needle gets stuvk at 300. My oil pressure gauge did the same thing, but now its always stuck at 110psi

Email prosport, maybe they have a fix or a good place to start. I have their premium 60mm in the RX7 for two years now, and have never had an issue.

rut row...does the clutch pedal have any tension? I'm afraid that might be a new pedal assembly. Those aren't always servicable parts.

The clutch pedal does have tension on it, although it feels different now. I drove to work with no issue but I drove very carefully. (lol2)

It's weird that it was outside the car. I'm not familiar with the clutch setup on the 3 but most of the time all the tension in the pedal is controlled by a torsion spring in the pedal assembly. I'm not sure what outside the car would have anything to do with it.

Sorry, it was on the floor in the car. Am I safe to drive it at all?
