The KLZE V6 - Need as much info as possible

So i came from the honda game where you can swap about 3498573984754 engines into a civic and i'm a man who likes to have a backup plan should the need arise

That being said i like to try new things and if my 2.0 ever smokes in my pro5 i'd like to invest money into a better motor - thing is the only swap i've seen for these cars is the KLZE V6

so for all you expert mazda guys, please fill me on as much info as you can about this swap

  • Is it a a total pain?
  • Does it drop right in?
  • Do you need different Axles?
  • Do parts cost alot of money just to be able to put the v6 in the car?
  • Do you need custom mounts?
  • Does anyone make a custom KLZE-to-Protege5 engine mount kit??
  • Does the KLZE require a different computer?
  • Does the KLZE come with a LSD??
  • Where could i get a KLZE?

I'm used to jumping over here: http://www.hmotorsonline.com/shop/ for all of my motor needs, and i've even ordered an engine from them which i ended up putting into 2 different civics and i loved the thing to death - However Is there a website like this that has mazda specific stuff that i could have on back up should the engine ever go bye bye??

(thumb) Thanks in advance for all your information in advance guys, i want all and any information on this swap so that i can determine if i'd ever want to do this or not, perhaps if it was simple enough i could pick one up with my next income tax and drop it in

well as far as i know ur 2.0l ecu will not work u need the ecu for that engine. and the motor and ecu can come out of a mx6 as far as i know.

yeah i figured that the ecu would most likely have to come from a vehicle that had that engine, i realized that after i created my post that it was kinda a stupid question to ask (hand) but i was too lazy to remove it (rofl)

good to know thanks (thumb)

what are ALOT of crazy parts? You really dont need much, i just covered basically EVERYTHING in the thread.

agreed you did cover everything

sifting through your lists of parts which is like 50 different things, this is what i came up with that would be mandatory to do the swap, please, if you wouldn't mind, if you could alter this to show just the bare necessities needed to get the engine in and running that would be awesome (2thumbs)

small things such as bearings for idler pulleys coolant, oil, trans fluid, rtv, clamps, vacuum hosing, heater hose, ps feed hose, nuts bolts, plugs plug wires, cap and rotor, wire, solder, heatshrink, electrical tape, some sockets, a 24mm wrench, zip ties, wiring manuals for protege and mx6, 2.5" exhaust flange and gaskets, catch cans, PCv valve, and so on, so needed things, but not special parts

the only piece of PS hose was the low pressure feed for the pump, i can take a look at the hose later and get the size. The high pressure line that goes from pump to rack from the 1.8/2.0 bolts to the v6 pump just fine, you just need to find a place to put the slack, i used a bracket that was on the hose already and bolted it to one of the studs on my strut tower that cruise control used to use.

as for any 2nd gen. that is right. You could make the swap obdII compliant. You just need a OBDII donor car use its wiring harness, ecu, and all sensors. Also you will have to run the OBDII connector from the ecu to the protege location. However, with OBDII you are stuck with the KL-DE and ecu. The KL-ZE can be "converted" but custom work to get EGR and all sensors swapped over would be needed, also, you would not see peak gains from the ZE since you are stuck with the US-Spec obdii ecu
