The $1000 Audio Challenge!!!!!

My thoughts on the A/D/S/, JL and the CDTs...

A/D/S/ are very nice quality speakers with excellent sound quality throughout the spectrum. The JLs I have heard once and I did not care for the sound from them, but many people do like them. The CDTs I have installed in several vehicle and overall they are a quality speaker for the money, but I do not believe that they are on the level of the A/D/S/ or the JLs. Now, if you step up to the next series from CDT, the EF series I believe, then they become much more level on the playing field.

Thanks for posting that up. I think tomorrow I'll run over and go give a listen to the ADS stuff, I just hope they have what I am looking for. O_o;

Btw: I hope more people keep adding to this thread, it's been a fantastic help for me, and I bet others who are on a budget.

Here's whats on order for my 2003 ES- no subs, but a damn good sounding system and it still ran me well under a grand.

HU - Clarion DXZ955MC - 489.99 (www.etronics.com)

Front speakers - OZ Audio Vector 6.5" componentsV65053 149.99 (First Class Auto, store by house)

Rear Speakers - OZ Audio Vector 6x9 V6X9X3 - 109.99

MP3 Pocket - 79.99

TOTAL =826.96

Adding One Sub and subtracting the radio pocket (-50 we'll say for the generic one) and adding in 10" Matrix Elite will put you at 976 without an amp.

I know, the last part is impractical, but it shows that you can get extremely good components for under a grand if you look around and do your homework

www.pricescan.com too for amps and HUs.

Might as well, get in on this.

JVC KD-SHX750 (coming soon) -----------$319
CDT EF-61CFi_25 --------------------------$200 (Got a good deal)
Ed 8a with sealed box by me --------------$230
Hifonics Brutus 500D -----------------------$140
DLS CA-23 ---------------------------------$200 (Another deal)
50 Sqft Edead ------------------------------$50
Wires, etc -----------------------------------$75
__________
----------------------------------------------$ 1200 give or take

Here's my under $1K budget system (that anyone can do).

Headunit: Stock
Amp: JL Audio e4300 $299
Component Speakers: Alpine Type S 6.5" $199
Sub: JL Audio Powerwedge 10" $179
Monster Cable Amp Wiring Kit
Monster Cable 9 conductor wire (for tapping the fronts)
Rear speakers: stock, driven by head unit (but faded out most of the time)

Installation, tax and 2 year warranty brought the total to $985. Purchased from Sound Advice/Tweeter.

I did a similar setup for a customer this weekend. He had an altima and wanted to use the factory deck. Best buy told him it wasn't possible.

We are going to install JL audio TR coaxles in the front, and 2 10W1v2's in the trunk in a JL prebuilt box. All powered by the e4300. The nice thing about this setup is that it leaves a really nice place to go for an upgrade. In his case, we wll upgrade to better fronts in the future, move the TR's to the back, swap the 4 channel over to run as a true 4 channel or bridge it to he fronts. At that point we would also add the e1400D for the subs. So he will get a great total system in 2 steps.

The first step was $1100 even with some price manipulation from me to stay on his budget. It would have only been $1000 if my installers didn't want extra labor for BS things. They actualy want $25 extra to install a 4 gauge amp kit even though a 2 channel amp install is already $60. I am about to just say screw it and write it up at what I think it should be.

Sources for this stuff? Sounds like you've got a decent setup, but Where from? were they closeouts or normal price? would others be able to get similar deals?

Beyond that, How's it sound? any weaknesses? strengths? Places you plan to add to, things you'd change if you could goback?

I have no idea how it sounds, the A/D/S and RE subs have been sitting in there boxes for 8 months or more waiting for me to get off my lazy ass and install this crap:)

Hi, Im normally on other DIY audio boards since Im a chip amp / home theater guy, but I just got an 06 Mazda3s GT zoom zoom

For SQ emphasis that can reach reasonable volume levels, Id first lose the rear speakers and definitely lose the stock receiver. Had there been a pre/pro only receiver for ~$250 Id have gone for that, but since I could only find an Alpine CDA-9851 for $250, that will have to do.

Im not that picky about amps since the sound quality between brands isnt as noticeable as the difference between speakers. 75W rms is more than enough for these custom speakers and 250W rms is perfect for the Sub I picked.

The buyout EXW12 woofer has been for sale for over a year and it once retailed for $350. It has a low inductance (Le: 0.75 mH) which means it probably sounds really nice; I just wouldnt expect to hit 125db with it

As for the Speakers, I decided to custom build them using some quality drivers with a crossover that doesnt use cheap electrolyte caps. The sound quality from capacitors is definitely noticeable from my speaker building experience. The right crossover and driver choice will really make a speaker perform well beyond the mainstream component systems. As for how the drivers will sound and whether or not you can seal or port the door Thats a different story, and Ill leave that up to the skill part of the install.

Maybe if you had enough time you could seal the door and use a software program to model your speaker design with the volume of your door, and then port it with flared ports hehe

As for the wiring, I have done enough testing where Ive found its virtually impossible to tell the difference between brands of speaker wire COAX would probably be my choice if I had a little more budget for the ICs and wiring and Id definitely build my own ICs and use decent interconnects that cost around $1ea, but since PE (parts express) sells those amp kits, Id say thats as cheap as it gets for all that wiring and interconnect stuff.

Anyways:

http://www.crutchfield.com/

Receiver = Alpine CDA-9851 = $250

http://www.acoustic-visions.com/

Adire Audio Extremis Extremis 6.8 (Woofer) $100 x 2 = $200

This is a high end woofer that will excel in SQ and SPL (13mm one-way xmax!)

http://www.partsexpress.com/

Speaker and Sub Wiring Kits: AMPLIFIER INSTALLATION KIT 8 GA. = $15.80 x 2 = $31.60 (everything to wire 2 amps)

Speaker AMP: PHOENIX GOLD R4.0:2 2x75W RMS 4 Ohm OCTANE-R AMPLIFIER = $131.94

Subwoofer AMP: PHOENIX GOLD R4.0:2 250w RMS x 1 (bridged mono, 4 ohm) = $131.94

Subwoofer: SOUNDSTREAM EXW12 12" SUBWOOFER 4 OHM fed 250W RMS = $140

Tweeter: PEERLESS 811435 1" NEODYMIUM DOME TWEETER - $18.50x2 = $37

Crossover: Pre-built 2-WAY CROSSOVER @ 4000 Hz $0.98x2 = $2 (replace 8 uF capacitor with a DAYTON DMPC-8.2 8.2uF-250V POLYPROPYLENE CAPACITOR for 2x$2.74 = $5.48)

12 generic Subwoofer MDF box. - $50 (see above posts)

(If you have a little wood skills, a table saw, a jig saw (for circle) and wood glue, this box can be made yourself for $20 in materials.)

I recommend adjusting the crossover points for the high pass and low pass and then swapping resistors to level match the drivers (especially if the tweeters are closer mounted to the ears). The cost for crossover modification parts is marginal since non-inductive resistors are 50 cents and good quality capacitors are in the $2-5 range.

Total Cost $979 Most of these items have free shipping but not all of it so Id say the budget would be +/- $50

It also depends if you have all the TOOLS:

Heat shrink, 2% silver solder, a soldering iron, etc

For this system The crossover design is really going to make or break it 

I'd recommend the Image Dynamics ID12v3 over the SoundStream EXW12. It's about the same price (www.cardomain.com) with the same power rating but will sound and perform better. 17mm XMAX on the ID12 vs. a 13mm XMAX on the EXW12 (coincidentally the same excursion as your midranges).

BTW, those midranges have a very deep mounting depth. You may run into issues with rolling down the windows if you plan to install in the doors. You will have to build a very thick baffle or do a kickpanel install.

If I had more of a budget, I'd definitely spend more than $140 on a twelve but I didn't.

The Soundstream is 2db more sensitive than the ID driver which is a plus seeing as how the amp I was able to fit in my budget is only 250W RMS.

To make an ID12V as loud as the Soundstream you'd need like 330 watts, therefore you are sort of getting more SPL per buck.

Plus the Soundstream will probably sound pretty good given the inductance (Le: 0.75 mH) is pretty low... The ID12V doesn't give that number, but my guess is that the number is higher. I believe AdireAudio posted an article relating inducatance to the "speed" of a woofer in transient response and how the lower the inductance the better the sound quality.

I'm not saying the Soundstream sub is all that great since it can't really get that loud... Not to mention, the better the SQ a sub has, the less distortion and it definitely won't SOUND very loud. It might however be worth $140 if you have a low power amp and don't need big SPL... I dunno...

Yes, the midranges have a mounting depth that's an inch bigger than others, but to make it work, I think it'd be nice to spend the time on making an enclosure and making any necessary mods to make it work. It probably wouldn't sound that great as a direct "drop-in" replacement driver into a door panel... I'd say it's a driver for advanced builders that are willing to experiment...

Get that Adire Extremis to WORK and integrate well with a tweeter and you'll have some serious SQ...

Here's Alpine's solution to the $1000 audio challenge...
h700ALP1000-f_mt.jpeg

Package includes: CDA-9847 receiver SPS-170A 6-3/4" speakers SPS-171A 6-3/4" component speaker system MRP-M350 mono subwoofer amp SWS-1242D 12" subwoofer with Q-Logic sub box KCA-420i iPod control interface plus amp wiring and sub box

Available at www.crutchfield.com.

Personally I would toss the second set of speakers and buy an amp for the front...but we all know that most consumers don't know any better. If their car came with 4 speakers they're just gonna replace all 4.

Other than that, I think this is a great approach for Alpine. At least they provide a COMPLETE entry level package for consumers that contains quality products at a reasonable price.
