Test pipe...

Are there any pre-made test pipes out there for our cars? If not, can someone (*cough* Kartboy) make one???

What would the gains be?

I might actually look into that. As long as there are flanges at either side it will be easy. Actually, I think I know how I could do that. I'll have to get back to you on that one. I need to get caught up on CAI's first.

Are you running a stock exhaust Kooldino? If so, the gains wouldn't be that noticeable maybe 2 or 3 horsepower. I used one on my old Protege LX 1.8. With the stock muffler, it sounded like total ass, with a magnaflow muffler it sounded worse than total ass... That's just my opinion though. It had a huge amount of resonance from 3,000 Rpm to redline, unbearable to me on the highway above 60 MPH. I went with a catco high flow converter in the end, same amount of gains, decent sound.... Just a thought.

I used a test pipe on my Probe, and with my Pacesetter exhaust it got pretty raspy around 3k. I hear it was dreamy with a Borla though, so just take your exhaust note into consideration.

Don't we have two cats? (Well, is the pre-cat not a cat?)

Two cats and a resonator...

What good is a test pipe on the street anyway??

They are illegal on street cars in Colorado. Well, that is if what you are referring to as a test pipe is what I have in mind as a test pipe.

So is ripping off the tag on your pillow. lol!:p Just reinstall it before you get tested for emissions.

That can become a hassle every two years...Or every year depending on what kind of mood those jerks at the test center are in.

Nah, get under the car. Unbolt test pipe. Bolt on cat. Done. Yay.

15 mins tops.

I'm guessing then that your idea of test pipe is simply removing the cat and placing in a straight pipe in it's place?

I thought a test pipe was basically the header going right into atmosphere...

And, I have enough trouble trying to remember to go to the stupid people to get the smog checked, little alone remembering to bolt the exhaust back on before I go.

Bosal already made a "test pipe". It comes with the fedral version of their Cat-Back system. It keeps the first cat but removed the second as you can see. The Bosal sounds nice not "raspy", it is loud but what do you expect, I don't mind it.

Here are some pics...

Yeah, it was pretty bad... To make matters worse, I had removed all the carpet and rear seats when I went up a class in autox. It was horrible. At say 70MPH it would drone like a 4X4 truck with huge tires or something. (My truck has headers and two 3 inch flowmaster 40 series with turndowns, and it didn't resonate as bad as that testpipe!!) Anyways, I "felt" just as much of a gain getting the catco hi flow converter installed as I did with the test pipe, just a much more pleasureable exhaust note, and little to no resonance.

Is there a way that you can somehow post a sound clip of the exhaust. I know that this was requested elsewhere on the forum but I don't think it was ever fulfilled. I'm in the process of saving some $$ for exhaust and have considered the Bosal but don't really want an exhaust that is extremely loud. I can understand it being louder in general and obviously loud under fast acceleration, but is it loud at sustained highway speeds. Let me know.

I OPENED UP THE exhaust pipes on the MP3 and removed the 2nd cat and resonator...it is a lil raspy in first after like 4k...but after htat i love it...it sound soo hot the racing beat exhaust has a nice note to it on the hwy and it is pretty loud...butt also nice a deep...sound very good

Someone did post a sound clip, Try a search. If that don't work I'll try and remember who posted it and see if I can't get it for you. I really have no idea how to post a sound clip on here.

NYCZMP3...I thought about changing out the Bosal Muffler for the Racing Beat just because I really don't care for the look of the Bosal all that much(Can Like). I might do that down the road just to see what the strait through piping does for the Racing Beat muffler.

ive got sound clips of my exhaust ive taken out the 2nd cat and resonator and put in 2.25 piping....

i just need someone to host it... i dont know where to put it...

Well, while we are on the subject, I will tell you guys my unique situation. A little while back I bought a nice Apexi N1 muffler, and went to the shop to have it put on, I figured I would get full exhaust some other time. (Since then I have been having big plans for a turbo so it's a good thing I waited.) When he took off the stock muffler I had the bright idea of thinking it might sound nice with it off. I revved it, and it did...extremely so. Guys, I'm really picky about exhaust sounds but I love a good sounding one. I love a really deep, clean constant sound, as opposed to the growl of a mustang or the drone of a civic, I hate both equally. So I told him to try the muffler on for a second, and it obviously sounded better without it to everyone around me. I figured I'd sell the Apexi, save some money and have a great sounding exhaust, and that's what I did (I welded on a nice lil chrome tip for looks though.) Right now, it is not unreasonably loud, but it comes down to this...

When I go turbo, I want to replace the restricting 2nd cat and resonator and put in some bigger piping, like 2.75-3.00" depending on how much boost I'll be running. It's already quite loud enough for me (and the perfect sound) so how much will taking out the resonator and getting bigger piping effect it? Also take into account that I'll have a turbo running off it too, installed probably around the same time.

You will probably need an exhaust when you get your turbo done and remove the resonator. But it will be up to what you like, so listen to it with and without a muffler.
You should have keep the APEXi for your turbo :)
