Oil smell during test drive? 2025 CX-5

I took a 2025 CX5 for a test drive today and really liked it but there was an oil smell during the test drive. They are telling me that they come from Japan and they put a coating on the under carriage so they can transport them from overseas and protect the vehicle from salt air. I have never smelled oil smell in a new car before, I have a Forester I bought brand new that comes from Japan and it did not have an oil smell. Can anyone recall if this is normal for the first hundred miles on a Mazda as they are claiming?

Take another one for a test drive and see if you can smell anything. It's possible during prep a tech spilled some oil in the engine compartment. The salesperson's explanation sounds reasonable, maybe they applied to much to the underside. Who knows, and I doubt if you end up buying one it will be the one you test drove. And NO, it's not normal. All I smelled for the first 1000 miles was that new car smell.

I am not sure it is an "oil smell", but my '22 did give out some sort of smell in my garage for a few week... and eventually it went away.

Why would they be adding oil? It comes factory filled—they drive each car off the assembly line and onto the ship. Maybe they only fill it "most" of the way and the dealer has to top it off.

Well the transmission comes factory filled too but there's posts on this site about people checking trans fluid after driving off the lot and it was low.

that's how my 2019 was when new....... I took it back and
complained and they said the same thing about the coating.
Guess it was true... smell went away after a few weeks........

It's not an oil smell. It's just the undercoating on some parts burning off. It will last a couple hundred miles

I never test drove my 2024 CX-5. I already have a 2018, so I figured it would drive the same. Upon arriving home with the new CX-5, It had a strong smell of burnt oil. I opened the hood and saw that any undercoating plus everything being brand new was burning. I kept an eye on it for the next few drives, and all that smell went away.

My 2016.5 smelled of oil, or something, for a couple of weeks after we brought it home. No problemo.
