I pull a 700lb. teardrop trailer with both a 2014 and 2016 Touring AWD (2.5l engine). The only modification I made was to install a Curt trailer hitch (and wiring). Works great.

In USA, the manual states you can pull up to 1000lbs without trailer brakes, or 2000lbs with trailer brakes. There are plug and play trailer harness available and hitches. Just make sure you don't overload hitch weight of 150lbs by using a bathroom scale. Electric brakes are best.

FYI, in Europe the exact same vehicle is rated to pull 3800lbs with trailer brakes, but wouldn't try that here.
Check your Canadian manual for ratings there.

The only modification I made was to install a Curt trailer hitch (and wiring). and a scangauge to monitor coolant temp. No problems at all.

Anyone using or can recommend a good electric trailer brake system for CX-5? I'm planning on pulling over 1, 500 lbs, between tractor, trailer, any some implements...

thank all for the info im also interested with your question edj_03
and does the 4 pin flat harness wiring work with trailer brake?

I had an old manual slide Tekonsha brake controller. I liked the ability to manually apply brakes at whatever level I chose, but most new ones have automatic brake methods. Electric brakes require different connector than 4 pin flat connector.

Not sure, had the hitch installed with 4 pin connector, then realized I would most likely need the trailer brake based on my expected use. Just started my research... Will let you know, when I get more info/ recommendations.

Which wiring adapter did you use on the 2016? Looking into adding a hitch to my 16 but was unsure which lighting adapter would work.

Here's the link to it on etrailer.com (which is where I bought it from). Easy to install - very plug and play.

I did not wire it to outside of the vehicle. I just leave the 4 pole connector inside the "trunk" and run it outside on top of the lift gate threshold only when I need it

Here is a link to the powered adapter.

The difference is that with a powered adapter the trailer lights are isolated from the car lights. If there is a short in the trailer wiring then the car lighting will still work.

I use this because trailer lights seem to often give trouble. If I lose lights at night at least I have the car tail lights and brake lights until I can get off the roar and fix the trailer. Last, the car lights are controlled by a very expensive modal, I don't want to blow it.
