Teeson's Probege Build Thread

You should buy my exhaust for the KL P5. ;) I'll even ship it to Canada. haha

Looking good, man. Hopefully you'll be firing her up soon! :)

lol thanx for the offer but I have a buddy who's a welder and he wants take a crack at it. I also plan to have a electronic dump off a Y pipe, so I can keep it quiet when I need to.
Though I will be looking for a KLG4 mani soon... :D

Thanx Rico, speaking of wheels what are you running these days? you sold the sawblades no?

nice ride man. I'm seeing loads and loads of KL swaps going on now that I pay attention to "what engine is in your Protege/323??". I mean - there's no sound like a KL screaming like a banshee from underneath the hood of a P5!

lol I know, it's like the KL was meant to be in there

Thanx boosted!

I have a probe engine in mine, make sure when doing that swap to look at probe diagrams, I only had Mazda's and the probe is a little different

Ya I found the ECU's pinout and continuity tested the harness etc.

progress for today: repainted valve cover not particularly happy with how it turned out, gonna have to live with it or sand it all down..
painted the bolts and grommet covers
drove to the end of the earth to get a new power steering bracket/tensioner as I broke the old one :D
also got new vacuum lines and injector O rings.

started tedious re-assembly of the rest of the engine, man it's hard to remember where everything came from.. shoulda documented that more carefully

you will need to extend your throttle cable bracket on the IM by about an inch or so to use the stock lines
im running the kl48 94 probe ecu, on the 93 probe engine and I use my spare etcs for my temp gauge
and the probe IM have an extra vac port on the back used for the HVAC which is great for a vac/boost gauge
are you running 1 ecu or 2

oh. I thought the stocker would reach if it had a straight line to the IM.. how does one extend it?
Ya I'm vague on details regarding the HVAC system, its on my non-essential list though. I plan to debug after the swap is running and working.
My donor probe was a 97 model (built in 96) GT. The engine had been swapped, the engine I have is the california emissions spec. ECU is a KLY2, VAF is KL02.
I actually played around and remove the ECU from the protege, just to see what it retained. Climate controls, lights, all accessories work, it even starts! I don't see a need for the protege ECU, the only thing it runs is the engine, the temp guage, and the tach.
alt is self regulated on the KL, speedo is run by the ABS system, which is separate from the ECU.

btw what are you're spare etcs? as in etcetera? lol little lost.

Engine coolant temperature sensor
I guess my phone corrected ects to etcs

Mine throttle cable fell short, on the short neck. Cut and weld

Ill take a pic of mine once I get off and go home

Ya I have a worst case backup plan to make a new cable, buy a longer one and put a tack on the end in the cabin.. I'd love to see pics though!

Progress! the swaps next week, means I gotte get busy. So last night I got around to taking some pictures:

The engine's fairly close to being reassembled.. just fighting the tensioner brackets, but I was at the yard this morning (more on that) and grabbed the right bolts, should be super easy now. And for all you keen eyed people, I forgot I had to put the engine mount on first :D, so the cover's back off.

So I was at the wrecking yard this morning because I broke the VRIS solenoids, apparently 15 year old plastic is brittle. I started reassembling the intake manifold, was replacing the vaccuum lines and they just came off with the old rock hard lines... So i'll be fixing that tonight..
I'm also wrapping my engine harness with loom n tape today!
so excited! also not looking forward to the self control i'll need to break in that clutch lol

You have a KLDE, right? I made the same mistake with that longer passenger side motor mount. Luckily someone had a ZE mount for $35 shipped and I swapped them out. But yeah, those timing belt covers are a total pita. haha.

Looks good and coming along well! Looking forward to the next couple of weeks. (2thumbs)

yeah sorry about the pics i've been having starting issues out of the mind of nowhere and its been raining alot here, and my job is cutting hours back but i have 48+ hours this week after they gave us sunday off second i get a chance ill get pics

ok thats cool, I appreciate the effort :)

Hey lewis how did you do your cable? I've probably read your thread like 5 times through now (lol, I know. research-a-holic here), but theres no pic or anything of how exactly you did it, just those split rod things you used.. maybe you can help me out.
I honestly learned most of what I needed from your thread, thank you for taking 6 months and documenting it all lol. I know wiring isn't your thing, so I'm trying to be detailed when documenting my wiring.

No problem. I'm actually returning my silver P5 to near stock for my friend so I'll snap some pics tomorrow. Basically, I just used one of those split pieces of metal as a spacer between the yellow plastic cap and the ball at the end of the throttle cable by the throttle pedal to take out about 1/2" of slack I needed. I'm a visual guy so I'll take a couple pics tomorrow. It's super simple though, no worries.

oh so your cable was too long? Jedidiah said his was too short.. lol I guess I'll find out when I do mine...

s***. I just remembered you're using the straight neck. I was running a curve-neck. Sorry, mate. I don't know what to tell ya on that one...

I'm running a KL01, straight neck not a KLG4 like you.. problem solved! however... what are you doing with that G4 mani? lol
