It's proven in almost every oil comparison test that I've ever read, that hands down, synthetic performs better than conventional. The big difference I know of when it comes to motor oils, is using a different weight e.g. 5w-30, 10w-40 etc. Lighter weight oils warm up quicker since they are lighter. But, they won't protect as well as the heavier oils when it comes to high temperatures.

So you guys think that 10w30 should be OK in Ohio's weather. Need something that is good with changing temps, because the weather here is pretty unpredictable.
I ran 5w-30 till the weather warmed up when I was living in Michigan. I was even thinking of experimenting with 0 weight during the winter. But as long as the temps are above freezing, 10w will be fine. I don't think anyone should be using 15w, I think that is quite a bit too thick and if you hate warming up your car in the morning, don't go any higher than 10w. I'm saying this coming from a perfomance stand point though. 15w-50 will certainly protect a lot better in climates where extremely high temperatures are reached........like Death Valley

I used to drive a BMW 5 series that I used 10W30 in the winter and 20W50 in the summer. I have always let the engine warm up before driving off. Usually wait 30 seconds or more each time.

As for the Ohio weather, it's probably similar to Indy. I am running Mobil 1 Full synth 10w30 right now. May go a little heavier for the summer, but I think it's fine for now. As little oil as these cars take, if you can change it yourself, (it's really easy) it costs less to do a full synth oil change yourself than to take it to a quick lube place for organic oils. It's a no-brainer to me.
Another quick Q: Do you guys change your filter at every oil change? I was told to do it every other change with synth. Just wondering!

Just changed to Amsoil 5w-30 with 8500 miles. Put on 100 or so miles, and there is a difference, not huge, but there is. Quieter, smoother, and less time at high RPM's in the morning when I am warming it up.
BTW, my 2 oil changes I got done at my Mazda dealer ... when I changed my oil, the stuff was BLACK, and filter looked like it was old... thinking they NEVER changed the oil??? I wonder

im going to do my first oil change (on my own...ive had my previous changes done at my mechanic) tomorrow...i have everything except the oil. was gonna get mobil 1...but whats this amsoil stuff? also...whats a really good filter? was gonna buy fram but a previous post said fram was crap...thanks guys.

i know of someone who tested mobile 1 vs. amsoil in my old club and they just didnt put it in and drive around they actually scientifically tested it... they tested the metal in the engine, they tested it for its ability to keep lurication and a bunch of other things... i will try and find the post at my former clubs website... it was about a year ago when he did this.. but i do remember that amsoil came out the winner in the test.... that is what won me over to amsoil... i think at 12,000 miles im gonna switch to amsoil... i dont want to pay the $31 to the dealership to change my friggn oil... thats just rediculus... they are ripping everyone off....

Amsoil is just another brand of oil. It's a little more expensive, but it, along with RedLine (another expensive synth oil) are supposed to be the best. I only bought Mobil 1 this last time cuz I couldn't get Amsoil easily. I will probably get it when I hit the 7000 mile mark for an oil change. (Yes, I use weird intervals)
As for the oil being really black at the change, if your dealer used regular oil, it will be black. Often very black. Especially at the beginning of the engine life. The block and pistons and all of the internal parts are still learning how to play nicely together and dig into each other a lot. It will start to get better with time. (I know that sounds stupid, but I put 110000 miles on a car in 2 years and it did get better over time with Synth oil)
Sopmeone asked about filters. DON'Tuse fram. They suck. I payed the ungodly amount of $12 for the Mobil1. Probably overkill, but I wanted the best they had. I don't really know other than that. Never fram, and Mobil1 is pretty good. Anyone else know? I still wonder how often you all change the filter?.?.
Anyway, best of luck! I still recommend changing it yourself. It takes about 10 minutes, and at stock height, the ramps don't even hit the front lip, (Man I love this car) and it all costs under $20. Gotta alove it.

My two cents...
I use Mobil 1 synthetic, becuase like what was said previously, Porsche, BMW, Corvette, Viper engineers can't all be wrong.
Mobil 1 is a very good oil.
As for filters, I use the Mazda OEM filter. The dealership usually has a deal if you buy more than one, and they work fine. Not to mention most long time Mazda owners continue to use Mazda OEM filters.
I also change my oil according to the manual...Every 5000 miles. The 3000 mile oil change thing is a crock.
As for metal bits and stuff in the oil during the first whatever miles is bull to...
