this story may not fit exactly in this thread but here it is

my wife's 04 6S Wagon 3.0 V6 has been having clicking sound (like metal to metal contact) since day 1 we got the car. we thought it may be normal so leave it there..2 yrs after as of now..it still exist..so i finally brought the car in and have dealer take a look..tech claimed coz we used pennzoil 5W-30 so it's too thick for "special designed" 3.0 V6 engine..i told him i have been using syntheic 5W-20 and 0W-20 since the 1st oil change in 2k miles...he said "i believe you sir but since u just wanted us to put in ur new 5W-30..the clicking sound will still be there"..his suggestion is to used dealer's "orange 5W-20" conventional oil and it may go away in 1 to 2 month...

i don't know..i just don't buy it..and i tend to stick with what i know..go for sythentic no matter what..and maybe bring to other dealers next time...

It might not be related to your oil. Sounds more like camshaft tick as described by this TSB.

Speaking of oil changes. Is the first oil change/service on a MS6 realy at 7,500 miles?

at the outside yes. Most everyone I know does the first change @ 3500-4000

I use Pennzoil Platinum. It's usually on sale and offers protection as good as Mobil1 based on used oil analyses (UOA's). Mobil1 synthetic protection for sometimes half the cost!

Go to bobistheoilguy.com and you'll learn more about oil than you'd want to know.

Synthetic oil has properties that are far superior to regular oil. I dont see how a conventional oil is any better. Synthetics can provide the proper lubrication at higher ( high rpms / load) and lower (start up) temperatures.

Lets use some common sense for a moment. If synthetic oil was not supposed to be used at all, I would assume it would be clearly stated in our manual.

I used only Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my previous car and after 95,000 miles my cam lobes were still shiney, the looked brand new. (with the oil cap removed I could see my cam lobes with ease)

As far as changing times....3k seems about right. I cant see any reason why putting new oil in your car could possibly hurt it. You are removing any debris or wear particles from the lubricant and removing old worn out oil. Not to mention your putting in a new filter which isnt clogged with garbage.

i always use mobil1 synthetic and its really good. I have put 19000 miles on the car and it runs very nicely.

FYI PP is a full synthetic. ;)

EDIT: Correction. I have just been informed that PP has just recently switched from Group IV or V synthetics to Group III. Boo! Hiss! (pissed) :bs:

Well, at least the PP batch I had in my car was prior to the switch.

I always use Mobil 1 but on my 1st change with my Speed 6...WalMart did not have any 5 qt. jugs of 5w30 and the case of 6 quarts ran about $12 more...didn't make any sense to me, so I bought the Pennzoil Platinum for the first time.
If they have indeed switched to a lower grade than I won't be buying it again, I go to Auto Zone and spend the extra money their instead.

I wanna clear something up here.

ALL synthetic oil BASE is the same, the only difference is in the grade, and additives.

aslong as you use a top brand (royalpurple,redline,motorcraft,mobil1)you will be better then fine.
you won't have a issue with any,UNLESS you use a grade not suitable for your climate.ie 30 wt in a 0 deg climit.
or 5-30 in 110 deg climit.

I recemend useing 10-30 for summer, and 5-30 for winter for most of the US,and if you race your car, consider useing like a 10-20,or even 30,but allow you car to fully warmup before driving it.

AND I HIGHLY RECAMEND STAYInG AWAY FROM PENZOIL!!!!!!!!!

they use additives that "coat" ,this is the worst thing I have seen in an engine.
I have seen engines less then 3 yrs old look like they were 20 yrs old.

That might be true for the dino oil, but people have been getting very good UOA's from Platinum synthetic. A fair amount of the discussion at BITOG is about Pennzoil Platinum giving comparable UOA's as Mobil1 for a fraction of the price. It certainly has the potential to be the giant slayer, though now I'm not sure given the downgrade to Group III. But then again, even M1 is now Group III so who knows.
