"Sweet 'n condensed" Solstice review

I figured I'd let you guys know what I thought of the Solstice since I have one to throw around for a couple days. I don't feel like writing a full article since there are a million out there already. So I'll keep it short and sweet:

Engine: Not impressed for the most part. It lacks torque in a major way and doesn't feel like the 170 hp that it's rated at. The powerband is nice in that it pulls harder and harder as the RPMs rise, but it's not like the silky-smooth S2000 that begs for the high-revs. Although it's a 4-banger, it shakes like a hotrod V8. Add a supercharger, GM.

Tranny: Nice. It feels like the RX8 tranny, except that you can shift fast between 1st and 2nd without the synchros randomly locking you out. It transmits a lot of the engine feel back to the driver, too. The gearing is low, so cruising is nice, too. Again, perfect for a supercharger.

Interior: Simply, clean, and purposeful. No complaints here. It does what a roadster's interior should do. The dimensions and ergonomics are perfect for someone my size (5'10' 175 lb.), but bigger guys might feel cramped in the sides. There is plenty of legroom, though.

Handling: I give it an A, not an A+. It's very nice and it hold the road fairly well, but not as well as the Miata or S2000. BUT, it is very predictable at it's limits, which in my opinion is almost more important. The ride is softer than the Miata and S2000, so it's forgivable.

Overall this car is totally worth $20,000. I have a feeling that it's restricted with the exhaust. The intake looks like it has a decent setup, and a filter would probably do enough. I still can't stress enough how much this thing is begging for forced induction, though. I say if you have the cash for a summer-only car, this is the one. Just save some money for engine upgrades.

Here are a few [crappy] photos. It's nighttime and I'm using a crappy camera. You all know what it looks like anyway.

Well for you mazda guys, it this car lacks torq the Miata is gona suck.

The MX-5 is rated at 140lbs @ 5000rpm vs 166 @ 4800rpm for the Solstice. Still, i've driven the MX-5 it it felt fast !! -but thats coming from someone who drives a Protege5 every day.

Is the top wrinkled next to the rear window when it's up?

yeah,they all do that.

I am not sure the rave for this new car,a miata is better looking cheaper, and handles better.

BTW,the saturn version looks ten times better, especially in person side by side.

Okay, I'll admit I'm biased here, but the Solstice is a pretty good car. It's got enough trunk space to hold everything you'd need for a trip to Vegas... half a dozen credit cards... groan. Pontiac did a pretty good job with it, but aside from the interior controls, the ergnomics suck... I couldn't adjust my seat with the door closed, the cup holders are pointless because they're a pain to get to and if it starts raining with the top down you're in trouble because there's not way to put it up properly without getting out of the car. Honestly, if I were looking for a second car to put some work into and wasn't going to drive it more than 8,000 miles a year, the Solstice is a great car, but for a daily driver I'll take a Sunfire before the Solstice.

See this is the first unbiased "Biased" opinion of the car that I feel is a genuine open minded opinion. I also don't see why they put the gas tank in the trunk. If this is a weekend car you need a place to put the bags when you take that short drive to the beach. And the top needs help. But I bet that these two issues when be fixed in the next few yrs, if not in the next yr.

the top fits oddly into the rear deck lid. When you put the trunk back down, you have to snap the back of the top into the top of the desk lid. It doesn't line up even close to flush and looks very odd. It almost looks like there should be a couple of motors to pull it down tight.

Well, after a little more time in the car I've found the sweet spot inthe power band. The problem is that GM usually puts torque down low, so this thing threw me off. It's still weak, but if you want to go anywhere you, need to be abot 5000 rpm or so. The problem is that the engine doesn't rev as freely as a car should that needs the high RPMs. It's very mechanical and it feels like you might hurt it revving to the 6800 rpm redline, but you really have to to get it to move.

One note: it's a lot of fun to wind it up in first and shift into second around a turn. It will cut the rears loose for a second, but never feels out of control.

One more note. For all the little problems I have with it, it is worth every penny of $20,000, as long as it's not a daily driver. Don't expect to transport any groceries in it.

yes, it does. the saturn is a sharp-looking car.

but i still want the miata over either one. :)

Spooled - That is a spot on review of the car and I agree with every bit. I drove one the other week at work and felt the same way about it, although it wasn't mine so I had no qualms about reving it up high to find the powerband. It's 80% that I'll have a Sky of a GXP Solstice next summer.

The Sky is a beautiful car. Considering it has the same powertrain/platform, I hope it has enough other goodies to make it worth the extra $5000. I would LOVE o have a Sky with a supercharger or fast spooling turbo. You'll have to take me for a ride since you're in my backyard, ha!
