Suggestion for restricting new users...

A new user's first post should not be a new thread. This will block spammers.

Alternatively, you can force new users to wait 24 hours before they can post a new thread. This will force them to actually search for their answer instead of just posting a new question.

Brilliant! I will add that users with less than 10 posts or have been members for less than a month should not be able to start threads in the For Sale or Marketplace forums...

Good idea, but we've found that creating an "X" number of posts rule is pointless due to the fact that members will do what needs to be done to get there, which invariably involves post-whoring and crapping on threads until their post count reaches that number.

The waiting period is a must.

I've mentioned that to a mod before. Excellent way of dramatically reducing the spam bots. Not all though, some have programs to post in threads. sly devils.

i see the good point of this but also you have to see that maybe there are new members who have honest questions they want to ask but cant start a thread

Let's take a look at why this thread was created. To prevent spammers from creating threads that generally annoy the populous.

Now let me ask you... what if these threads were never seen? Sort of like a tree falling in the woods (with no one around to hear it) would it still be annoying?

Restricting a new members right to create a thread may alienate them at the most critical time. Instead, perhaps we can simply make sure new user's (whatever they are defined to be) threads are not visible to the general populous.

Normally, with spammer threads, they appear on the forum index right collumn the second they're created... then some jerkoff says something stupid like "why yes... I would like a new nokia n95 for $20" which keeps it alive long enough for someone else to repeat the process.

By making them 'invisible' the tree is falling... but nobody can hear/see it. (at least on the main forum index page)

So what if it's a legitimate thread and the newb has a serious question that needs to be addressed? Well the thread will still be visible in the subsections... where the true diehards live anyway. Generally, the types that troll around there aren't likely to bump a pos thread for the sake of it so it'll die a quick, miserable death.

how about not letting new members post links, emails, images for the first whatever posts?

that seems to help on another forum.

This is the best solution IMO. Images should be allowed (what if a new member has a problem and needs to post a picture of the broken part), but links and emails are not needed to ask a question.

I'll do some research and see if this can easily be done with vBulletin.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

i think images are the unfortunate casualty, but i agree that if someone needs help they should be able to post pictures. maybe in that case, a fellow forum member can post the pics for the new user (i'm sure they can send links in PMs). it's quite a bit of work, but there's ways around it if you really have to post a picture. and i don't think i've ever seen a first post that included a linked image.

This is definitely the best solution... no link posting for new members.. cuts out 90% of spam. but as far as we've been able to tell.. can't be implemented
