STX Build Thread

crap, I knew I forgot something, I forot to weight it. I may take it out again though.

That's OK....I'm sure it's an improvement over the stock bar in weight and stiffness.

245/35/16s sound HOT

Look forward to watching this thread... Justin, you might try the Corksport front strut bar. It looks like a pretty nice piece but only costs $79. I have their MX6 rear strut bar and it is a well-built bar.

Britt...I'm very interested in the 245 series tires. We have the exact same suspension setup so I really want to see how they sit on your car. I'll be needing new street tires soon.

Wedge seat brackets are finally here after UPS delays...

My seats are now SCCA STX legal for 2007 at 26.2 lbs each. Saved a whopping 25lbs for only $1700!

Thanks SCCA!

How low does your car sit? I've been thinking about upsizing to 235/4x/17s but I rub the rear already with 17x7.5 +48s. The tire is also getting close to the trailing arm. Time to bust out the dremel and trim the OEM spring perch and fender, I think.

I thought they only needed to be 15#. Did that rule change for 07?? What's the requirement now?

This is a great looking build!! And I love seeing more cars playing in STX, such a fun class! Currently I'm building up a '94 MX6 to STX Spec, which you probably know has a lot of family ties to the Protege!

Have you made any progress on the derelin bushings? I've heard very mixed results, and as I'm planning on this soon myself, I would love to know your experience.

Have you tried the RT-615's? I too considered many different options, including the 'Kooks (glad I didn't ;) ) Do you have the Toyo's yet?

Of further interest, here's a thread on SCCAForums.com I'm sure you'd find interesting :)

I have measurement photos around here somewhere, I think they are in Xelderx's thread about coilovers. The car will go a bit lower when I put the eight inch springs in and put the shorter tires on. This is probably not going to be my daily driver anymore, so it can be uncomfortably low.

A 235/40/17 would fit, but I don't know how low you can go.you'd definitely have to roll the fender lip. As far as the spring perch, I have no idea.

I've run on my Toyos for the last few events and while I like them a lot, they just will not be a National tire. I ran 2 seconds slower than the WRXs at the last Tour on my Toyo 4s. But there were a lot of other reasons as well, and I have made numerous changes to the car since.

That is an interesting thread you pointed out, but doesn't really convince me of anything. I still am sure that the MSP is a National contender - with me driving? who knows - but no one even thinks about it, because no one has done it.

I guess that is kind of the point of this whole experiment. To see what happens with a 100% prepped car (if there is such a thing.) It is an expensive experiment? Yeah, I guess. But what the hell. Ever since the 1984 Super Bowl between the Raiders (Oakland at the time) and Washington Redskins, I've always rooted for the underdog.

I like in that thread how they keep saying you can't fit a 245 on a FWD car.

As far as the Delrin bushings go, I have to fire up the lathe one of these days. I have had them in several other cars, including two of my daily drivers, and never had a problem with them. eventually they can crack, but rubber deteriorates, so what's teh difference? Bushings shouldn't absorb any thing, that is what dampers are for, bushing points are strictly pivot points. People just don't like the added noise from the Delrin bushings.

If you look back a few pages, you'll see me bitching about the new seat rule. Now the seat and mounting brackets have to weight 25 lbs total and the brackets have to mount to a minimum of the four factory mounting points (I wonder about VWs? I know in the A2s and in the Corrados the factory seat only has three mounting points...)

Okay, next four days off, I plan on getting everything installed and finished up. I also have to go car shopping. Don't know what for yet, there are a few MP3s in the area (within 200 miles). Or, the split personality comes out and I'll be driving a 50 Merc or 53 Chev.

I would like to use the Dakota for my DD but even with the 4.7L it only gets 10-12 mpg city driving. But let's see...if I lowered it, put on a Snugtop, ditched the OE tires and got something lower profile...maybe the mpg would go up.

But that's another thread.

For what that thread is worth it's good to follow, may or may not lead to a change that could shake up STX. Logically, with the inherent advantages the WRX I could certianly see limiting them to a 225 width tire, would level the playing field just enough to make things more interesting. Afterall you cannot deny the WRX's dominance in STX, rarely are they beaten by a Mini or a Bimmer, and the margin is never much at all.

As for 245's...if they made something in a decent 16" I'd be all for it, even a 235....but I do NOT want to go spending money on 17" SSR's so I can have a rim of comparable weight to what I have now while getting the wider tire...$2k on wheels/tires just seems better spent elswhere...like the OPM LSD in the Mail and Corbeau Seats :D

So, if you're planning on Nat's...Will you be doing events in California or perhaps Utah? I'll be attending some Pro-Solos abroad this year and it would be a LOT of fun to race with you :)

I'll be at Atwater, Sandiego, Wendover, Packwood, and whatever the other one is on the West Coast.

I think the tire issue is moot. We'll see next year.

I'll weigh them with the Falkens on when I get back home.

Cool...I'll find the tire weight and subtractaroni. I was looking at the Wedssports TC-005 in 16X8 but Tirerack only offers 1 offset and it's like -34. That would work perfect on the front, but the back would stick out pretty bad. I would have to get used to not getting so close to the cones. I noticed though that I wouldn't gain much extra tread width by going with the 245/45-16 Hoosiers relative to the extra weight. They claim to only be about .2" wider than the 225.

17s

Just an FYI for everyone wondering about tire size and rim width. I recently got a set of Enkie RP02s, 17X7, 45 offset, 15lbs each and mounted Bridgestone RE01 245/40 up front and 235/40 in the rear. I have Tokiko Illuminas with stock springs and have no rub up front and a very slight rub in the rear on the lip of the fender. I rolled the rear and have no issue at all. For some reason Tokiko welded the spring perch on the Illuminas further down then the stock blues so the rear is lower now. That kind of screws things up for lowering springs.

I'm a little worried now about coilovers. It seems that they take away from the already limited tire and rim space we have. Coilovers are definately the choice to go for better handling but what's it worth if it limits the space for wider rims and tires? To run the 245s properly up front I'm going to need to get wider rims. The 235s fit just fine on the 7" rims but I want to run wider up front.

Cool, it won't be "Subaru Touring WRXtreme" anymore...

Kinkda like STS being Spec Honda? And now that the Miatas are getting faster than the CRXs in STS2, Spec Miata V2? lol

I just fit a 235/40/17 tire on a 17x8 47+ Offset wheel on the car.

The car is using 6" Springs front and rear

4 degrees of camber in the front
3 degrees of camber in the rear

The front's fit fine with no problems, the rears fit but your just going to have to roll the fender lip

Just a picture to show how low my car is.
