well i think the MS3 is also aimed at a a different group, thats why its a hatch its aimed more at people who want a fast car but can still lug around their kids, groceries, trips etc. Have fun puttin all that stuff in a cobalt.
This is from Edmunds.
The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS is nearly 2 mph quicker through the slalom than the old model, averaging 69.2 mph. The last Mazdaspeed 3 we tested went through at 69.3 mph, while the Saturn Astra, which shares the Cobalt's chassis but not its power, manages 69.1 mph. There's little difference in skid pad performance between the new SS and the old: 0.89g versus 0.87g. Here again, the Mazdaspeed 3 and Astra turn in numbers that are nearly identical to this.
these new cars try to compete with the speed3, the csrt4, and now this one... why did honda even made a k23 turbo for the rdx? to compete with mazdas cx7 and the cx7 dont even have the tmic, nothing beats mazdas =)
The bar has been raised. Now it's up to mazda to see if they can top it on the next mazdaspeed vehicle in this class.
I don't think the bar has been "raised" as the Mazdaspeed3 is arguably just as capable. Now if the Cobalt ss just flat out blew the MS3 away sure but I don't see that happening, it's too close.
I personally could care less but it's just a little annoying how some people like to automatically say one car is better or one car just "raised the bar" without sufficient proof / testing.
Well, there have been numerous reports and tests done so far with the new cobalt SS and it has beaten the speed 3 soundly in most if not all categories. Granted not by huge margins, but it did post better numbers all around. I say kudos to chevrolet. There was a day not so long ago that domestic small cars were a joke at best. Now they are competing strongly which is a good thing.
If the Mazdaspeed3 had launch control or no lift shifting you'd probably be praising the technical innovation in the vehicle and Mazda's foresight, but in the Cobalt SS it's a nanny that we can do without because our car is better.
I hate to bring this up with you again, but you are going through bizarre logical convolutions so you can still say your car is "better".
Get over it, man.
On my way home from work, new 08 turbo cobalt tail gates me for no reason. So i let him pass but he refuses to move. So oncoming 3-4 turns i went into racing mode (i hate getting tail gated), I look at my rear view mirror and he was far behind and on the straightaway he does rice flyby at pretty high speed.. (im crusing at 40mph at that point)... wow i hope none of the cobalt owner are like this..
First off, I'm not trying to justify anything. Im happy with my purchase and have no idea why you would make such a comment.
None of my post implied anything about one car being better than one or the other. I think you are so hell bent on claiming the Cobalt SS as such a better performing car that you are almost delusional and refuse to comprehend anything I post.
I have simply pointed out that the performance capabilities between the MS3 and the Cobalt SS are so minor that it really doesnt matter from that aspect. Most people modify these kinds of cars (sport compacts) to some extent anyway.
So in summary, it doesnt really matter what the stock performance of these 2 vehicles are in the real world as they will most likely be at least slightly modified. The real question in my opinion is which one responds better to simple modifications such as intake and exhaust? We all know by now what a difference a simple intake and exhaust modifications and do to a stock MS3 (Massive gains)
Im just pointing out some important aspects to consider before jumping on the new Cobalt ban wagon as some have already seemed to do.
Flame away!
anyone seeing a turbo on the roads already is likely to be mistaken, as even the SS forum has yet to have anyone claiming possession or showing pics. Cars are still being produced, transported to dealers @ this time.
