STUBBORN Misfire ...

Hey guys i also have a misfire problem.

i own a Pro ES 2001 with 98000km / 61000miles.
Heres what it does

My idle is very stable, no problem with the o2 or something. sometimes(1 on 30 attempt), when i start my car, the it idles at 200-300 RPM then when i put gas it goes to normal forever. ( no check engine this is not the problem)

the problem happened twice to me this week. last time i was driving at around 45miles/h then i lost power from my engine. The engine wasnt BUCKing, it was very stable, but the car dropped to 40, 35,30, 25, 20 even if i downshifted and put full gas. It top speed at around 22. It was like driving a PERFECT CONDITION 30 HP car.

that happened twice to me. first time i changed my spark plugs, now i dont know what to do. having the misfire code with the scanner.

whats wrong ? coil pack problem? i get them from the dealer? how many do i need?

Thanks guys!

yeah sounds like the same thing. does the code tell you which cylinder misfired? if so i'd swap the packs and see if that fixes it.

I paid $23 from the dealer for the backups I carry. They tried to tell me $100 but I told then they were looking at the wrong ones. then magically he foudn the right ones. The dealership does sell the correct packs for around 23 bucks, you got sucker'd man, those bastards!!!!

Don't worry, for 150$ (CAN) each, I didn't buy from the dealer. I ordered 2 ignition coils from RockAuto for 60$ (CAN) including shipping. I just can't understand the price difference. I called a few shops around here (Ottawa, Canada) and everyone said : " coils for 17 $ each, impossible! Your looking at 150$ each ..."

Ignition coils (2):

Mazda = 150$ x2 + taxes = 345$
RockAuto.com = 17$ x2 + shipping + exchange = 60$

Where's the logic in that! (boom07)

Do you have a CEL? What code? To check your ignition coil without going thru a lot of steps, switch the ignition coils, you can clear the code(take the neg cable off of the battery and pump the break three times, wait fifteen minutes and reconnect) and then see if the misfire moves to those cylinders. That way you can buy the one you need and not worry about throwing the wrong one away. I went ahead and bought two for just in case sake.

I would check:
Plugs
Ignition Coil
EGR - there is a thread on here on how to clean it
MAF - as sometimes it may play a part

I have checked all of these on mine and it turns out to be the first cat. I have P0421 code

do you if it happenes while you are at parking gear or stop?

5spd, but yes at a stop it would dip. I have it in the shop to have all of the belts changed and to see why there was a quarter sized spot of oil in the driveway. Couldn't be but a couple drops but at this point?lol I am going to jump on the next header GB and not have to worry about this dang cat/O2 sensor crap.

Seems most people that have the misfire end up having the cat code also. Am I the only person that sees that as strange as they are not directly realted but fail at the same time?

What exchange do you mean at rockauto?

FYI -

If you are going to get a new ignition coil before 02/28/2006, pm me for a 5% discount code from rockauto. I reply with it quickly and several people have used it so far.

Oh, that exchange.lol

No problem at all (thumb)

Sorry, I mean the exchange from US dollars to Canadian dollars. I ordered from RockAuto with your 5% discount code, Thanks again! The total was 50$ US for 2 coils including shipping, but my credit card will charge me 60$ CAN.

I GET MULTI-MISFIRE code, (and RANDOM MISFIRE code)

i would try replacing the coils, replace the plugs again, check your wires, and reset the ecu....it sounds like your only running on a couple cylinders..

you suggest me replacing the 4 coils? i wont replace the plugs i replace them like 3 days ago.

i would like to know the part # from the dealer to be able to get them from the dealer directly for 2x$$ instead of 150 or even ordering them.

thanks

alright thanks as soon as Tim gets us the part # from the dealer ill get ahold on those parts.

thanks again ill give you some updates on my problem later

I have the miss fire problems, I changed the plugs, changed the wires. Now I'm going to try and change the coils (1 coil for two cylinders, 2 coils total). I ordered two coils from Rockauto for 50$ total, so even if it doesn't work it's not a big loss.

Don't buy coils from the dealer!!! $$$$

look above. Tim says that he got them from the dealer for $20 a piece. he's getting us that part number.

Sorry guys, I did not get the number yet. I sent the local guy who has mine a message. Once he responds, I'll post it up or have him post the P/N up. Sorry for the delay.

edit: Okay, this is the number he gave me, FFY1-18-100 This should be the mazda P/N since it was what is on the box from Mazda. That is for 1 coil and should be NO MORE THEN $25. When I was looking for mine, I was quoted from $21 to $25 per coil. Like I said, the dealership I got them from charged me like $23 plus tax a piece. Oh yeah, these were for a 2001 2.0 liter motor. Which all 2.0 liter motors should have the same P/N I think. I know 01 and up are the same for sure.

I'll call my local stealership tomorrow. You are getting jerked around man, they are only 20 couple bucks a piece. Don't pay that amount, that's what they tried to tell me, that the coils were 100+, but I told then they were wrong. So they found the right ones. If my local dealer has them for 20 couple, I'll pick 2 up and send them to you or get the number and you can have your dealer call then up, because they are definatly dicking you around. You do have a 2.0l 2000+ protege right?
