Stock Tires

you will need either All Season or Winter tires. I've had the same stock tires on another car and in snow and ice, they won't go anywhere. they will become hard and slick in temps below 40. so much so that when I had them on in the mid 30's they thumped for miles with flat-frozen spots until they warmed up.

again, I think if you went all season performance tires that would be good. this way you could simply transition to them full time when the stockers wear out. that is if money is an issue. they still won't be cheap though.

IMO, and as I've done....get a nice set of winter tires and wheels and enjoy the car year round.

Blizzak LM-25's are awesome handling tires. You won't hardly notice any difference between them and all season high performance tires on dry roads and in snow and ice, they give much better grip than all season. Fairly cost effective too.

Here's my winter set up:

^^^ nice tires, would you say it would be worth getting if it only snows 3-4 times a year, and maybe only one of those snows actually have more than 3"?

I think it also depends on where you live, like here in the D.C. area, they are going to start spraying chemicals this year before there is a potential snow fall that is supposed to melt all snow that hits the roads. It's not a typical salt, it's some manufactured spray chemical. If thats true, than it will look like there will be very little snow on the roads around here from now on, and would be very hard for me to justify buying winter tires.

the stock tires are s*** below 40 degrees and you want to chance driving them on snow n ice?

don't do it...

Roll the dice and see what happens... I would find out what that chemical does to my car before I drive over it. I know in Northern Mi they are using a beer bi-product (dont ask cause I dont know) and mixing it with the salt. It works at colder temps than your standard road salt.

got these http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...e&partnum=06QR6AMAXA&fromCompare1=yes&wTire=7 on steelies less than 500 for rims/tires mounted/balanced. I used stock tires last year and it was the worst winter driving experience of my life. Put these on this weekend. We got six inches of snow monday/tuesday and these bad boys are freakin amazing. It was night and day + some. Will be selling stock wheels for local pickup in northeast ohio as soon as I clean um up and get pics PM if interested anyone. (friday)

Your winter set up is sick!!!! OZ's lol(thumb)

Cut back on the double espresso half-caff lattes and spring for a winter set. Depending on how long your cold season is, winter tires should last at least several years. Unless your job is asking customers if they want fries with that, you should recoup that money in no time. Plus, you'd be keeping yourself and others on the road safe.

Having almost slid through an intersection yesterday on less than an inch of snow, I'd say it's better to not risk it.

Short answer.

Stock Tyres in winter?

Short answer, NO.

Long answer:
In snow you will go NO WHERE. These tyres are NOT made for the cold weather. They're NOT made for snow.

In fact you can't even 'get by' in the snow.

You will seriously jeopardize your life and the life of others if you retain stockers in winter weather.

Scale of 1-10 of how serious is this 'no' answer? 10.

Do you get my point? How else can i explain?

As a former S2000 owner, i know it also came with REs. Have a trip to the S2ki forum and do a search on winter with stockers. Learn from experience and the experience from others.

I once did a 720 in the S2k with stockers and it was dusting out.

In fact I changed to my winter tires this past Friday, and I live on the east coast. This was being late.

I think having a set of winter tires is worth it no matter what. It only takes one time to get in an accident or ruin a good pair of pants from a scarey situation.

Yes, the LM-25's are worth it. Ride, quietness and handling are not all noticeably affected. I snaked through some nice turns this morning on my favorite stretch of local roads and they are great.

The solution yoiu mentione is used here in Ohio....likely the same. It helps, but not so much against snow as it does black-ice. We still have tons of issues though. Often times it the drivers, not the conditions that cause accidents.

Again, I had the same stock tires on my Grand Prix GXP...V8 with a lot more torque and power and they did okay in light snow, but anything above a couple inches....let's just stay I was stuck 3 times in one year. I made it out eventually, but there's nothing like blocking the road with a car that shouldn't have issues...but the tires couldn't bite.

The other nice thing is typically only get about 12k out of the stock tires...my GXP was exactly that for the fronts. Having winters on for 5-6mos will get me two season out of them.

wow, at that price I actually might be tempted to get a set!! where did you get cheap steelies? Just wondering.

yeah, there is no doubt that minnesota will get a blizzard every winter, winter tires are definatly a must there.

with the speed3 though, regardless of tires, I wouldn't take it out 5+ inches of snow. Here in maryland and especially the DC area though, we might get 5+ inches one time a year, and when we do, everything shuts down, and people become retards on the road.

We keep going no matter how much snow falls in MN. With the right tires the speed will get you thorugh 5 inches easily.

I live in the Maryland area too, and I bought my car last winter. No issues at all with the stockers. If you can't drive your car in the snow without getting winter tires, I really don't think you should be driving in the snow at all (even with winter tires). Seriously, its all about controling your car, I have been driving in the snow for many years, and I take advantage of going out in the snow when ever I can(part because its fun, and part because its about gaining experience in the snow), so maybe its just my experience that helps me, but if you are not confident in the snow, than get winter tires and avoid snow driving at all possible. For everyone's safety.

And the retard award goes tooo.........

Please don't respond to this. I don't want to argue. But, the stock tires don't hold up in a MM of snow. I've done it. Experience doesn't mean s***. When you float for 200 feet in light snow after downshifting, calm braking, more downshifting, more braking, ebraking, blasting your horn through that intersection. You'll know..

^ seriously. Even the best driver in the world will crash if the car has no traction and is sliding on snow/ice. I have Perrelli Suttozero's, they are kick ask.

about 3-4 more inches tonight so far still amazing with no plowed roads. Altimax Arctic FTW saw a durango all over the place buzzed past him lol.(drive)

I will be dipping my toes into winter driving after a 15 yr hiatus. Equipped poorly with brand new goodyear eagle GT in 225/45ZR18... wish me luck. 18 degrees and 2 feet on the ground in places, another 8 inches expected tomorrow.
