Stock Intake Modded and Restored

:
2017 CX3 AWD
I was considering the CorkSport SRI for my CX-3 and have decided to hold off while I experiment with the stock box without inlet snorkel and resonator. Would have deleted this post but will edit it instead when I am ready to pursue further. 😁

What are you doing to the inlet snorkel?

I would not mess around with the stock box. esp. not replace it. stock box good.

I took it out and the car performs differently. The stock box is still in there with the panel filter and taking loose air straight from a large hole. I suppose the narrow and curved inlet passage helps getting air ready for use? Not sure if the temp made the difference. 🤔 Perhaps I need to wait for the ECU to learn?

SRI works great on my R56 NA, I made my own and got the biggest cone filter that I could fit in there. For smog, I use the K&N Typhoon setup.

It will learn quickly and nothing beneficial.

SRI goes against low end biased powerband of these cars.

I think the snorkel/inlet is meant to reduce air turbulence and noise, in addition to pulling cooler air. I think I read in some of your other posts that you're aiming to pull warmer air to help with fuel economy?

I wanted to see if this setup offers any benefit beyond the increased noise. If there is none, then the snorkel will go back in. 😬 Any MPG gain isn't worth the change in how it drives.

I wonder if the cone filter in the CS setup works as the narrow passage way (enclosed chamber) to reduce turbulence without reducing noise. If there is no loss of low end torque there, it's worth considering.

I doubt the snorkel is restricting airflow on a stock 2.5G.

Also I don't know if it's the same part on the 2.5T or if it was enlarged.

From reading the specs of CS SRIs, the inner diameter of the silicone pipe (coupler between TB and MAF) for CX-3 (2.0G) is 3". It is 3.5" for CX-5.

The stock snorkel is not designed to restrict airflow, but the short ram setup supposedly allows for more air flow. I like the CS cold air box that adds an entry for more air from the fender.

Put everything back, including the resonator, and NO tape over the hole between the inlet and resonator. While the car is in motion, fresh air enters from the top inlet opening, feeds into the tub below the panel filter, and also down into the resonator. The temp in these parts is closer to ambient than the rest of the bay. When the car slows down or stops, air flow slows or stops. Whatever air is needed for idling is in the inlet and resonator. If I tape up the hole to resonator, less cooler air is available for idling. (I realized this after seeing the CS cold air box with extra access to air from the fender).

I struggle to understand why these parts are designed this way. Which science subject in high school would have helped, had I been a good student? 🤣

Can admin move this to the CX-3 sub, please? 🙏
