Ok well I have a question for all of you. I have my mp3 there is 24 000 k's on it. I live in Toronto btw. Now when my friend follow me and I am driving my car and flooring it on on ramps or just even off a red light my friends can't stand to be behind me. They say my car has a god awful smell and this weekend I tried it. I let my friend race with my mp3 while I was in his car and they are all right... there is a stink that comes out. I know our cars supposevily runs rich but what the hell is this stink. I hav also smelled it when I was on the dyno with my car... i thought it was my witner tires or something... but in reality it's my exhaust spitting some nast smells. Is this a cause of fuel being dumped at WOT... or what...

I use 94 octane all the time.

Thanks

what is actually emitting the smell is the Cat. what you are smelling, smells like sulfur right? rotten eggs? that is your cat....it will do that when it gets really hot....like when you are driving it hard....but anther thing is that not ALL of your gas is being burnt....a minute amount is probably getting carried over into your exhaust and thus into your cat.....

Another part of this is the gas you are using....you do NOT need to be putting 94 octane into our engines....just doesn't need it....not to mention it doesn't burn properly and some of it gets carried over into the exhaust and into the cat....which makes it that much hotter and STINKS!

Yes it does smell like a rotten egg smell. But I never had this on any other cars even my last Protege.... I don't have any other friends with stinky cars....

BTW our cars (MP3) do need the higher octance fuel to keep the advanced ignition timming. That is where they get the extra 10 Hp over the regular 2.0L engine.... it says on my fuel door Premium Fuel recommended. If I run regular my engine will knock and my knock sensor will pick it up and throw the timming to the regular setting until I put premium gas in it. I confirmed this with Mazda Canada themselves, as to why they recommended the higher octane fuel.

Just curious jcs, but where are you buying your gasoline? I know here in Winnipeg I think Esso/Petro Canada and pretty much all the others sell only 91 or 92 Octane...the only one that might come to mind that has 94 is Mohawk but I thought the Ethanol blend they use was supposedly not the best. Just curious.

didn't realize it was RECOMMENDED...then OBVIOUSLY you are correct in running it.....you may try using a different brand believe it or not...it MAY make a difference...

AND....is this something that just started this winter? I know that the "winter gas" in some peoples area will cause this too....the stabilization additives react in some way.

REGARDLESS....the smell IS coming from your cat.....I have smelt this on many cars since 1975.....but usually just smell it after running them a bit hard.

Stinky mp3

The gas he is using is probably Sunoco Ultra 94....go to sunoco.ca for deatils.

I run this in my mp3 and it is great ! Tough to find outside of southern ontario though.

The sunoco site has lots of info on gas types, stations etc.

Yeah I am running Sunoco Ultra 94. I guess I could go down to 92 and save some dough.... I have tried 91 from Esso and 92 from shell but the smell was still there....

Alot of people notice this smell cause they are always behind my ass... never in front... I haven't followed too many cars cause they are all slower then I... should I get a sticker in the back saying....

"Block your nose when you get schooled by me !!!!"

LOL

The STINK you speak of, JC, just happens to be the STENCH of filthy CANADIANS! MUHAHAHAHAHA.

:p

Kooldino...the canadian joke I'll ignore :)

I know your kidding.

Anyways

That is where they get the extra 10 Hp over the regular 2.0L engine....

Not exactly true. At least not ALL 10hp. Maybe 2-3...but NOT all 10. We've discussed this before. Don't believe the Mazda "techs" on the hotline....believe me, they dont' always know what their talking about. MY own dealer proved that to me. Call one guy get one story, call another get another story...and so on..

Personally I've tried every gas from reg. to Premium, and I don't feel much of a difference if any.
