Steering Wheel Audio Control Problem

My brother just bought an 06 mazda3 hatch, and the audio controls on the steering wheel don't work. The cruise controls do, just not the audio. The radio is OEM. Any thoughts on why this might be the case? Any easy troubleshooting tips that might solve the problem? Thanks guys!

blown fuse maybe....any mods with the electrical system?

Not that I know of...although I think there might be an alarm. I just find it odd that only the audio controls don't work!
