Squishy floors

Hello all,
New guy to Mazda here. Got a CX-9 after ten years of only Audi and Volkswagen. Anyway, I noticed the floors under the carpets to be a bit fluffy. Is that normal? The car was used and I just want to make sure it might not have been flooded. Thanks for any help!

Yep, it's normal. They have approximately a half inch thick layer of sound insulation underneath the felt mat they use for carpeting. If you look under the passenger side floor mat you'll find a plastic cover that says chassis number on it. Lift up the cover and you'll see the layer of insulation.

The floor covering used on the 9 is definitely non-conventional.
