The surround is usually made of rubber or foam and connects the woofer itself to the outer case of the sub. Here, I found a pic of a gay sub with a purple surround to clarify it for you:

In this case, these were the last generation of Comp VR's that had foam surrounds, and thus their fragility. And unfortunately my dumbass didn't put them away very carefully 3 years ago when I took them out of my fc and now the surrounds are no good. The one in particular has a good size tear in the surround.

You can get repair kits and also, Kicker is very good about taking in old products and repairing them for minimal $$ back to like new condition. They have a very good refurbishing program. I'm not looking to make any extra $$ on them, but they are some decently heavy subs so shipping will cost a little $$. Let me know if you're interested.

Yes it is OEM; it hooks up via audio rca's to the headunit like any other amplifier.
