Spied: 2017 Mazda CX-9

Really? I really thought I could though...geeezzzz . Yes family will sit, test and make partial decision right there and then. Do u have kids? 3rd row access, cargo space, gadgets...all that can be tested on the spot. That and design is 90% of decision for soccer moms. Just because they don't go straight to the dealership, it doesn't undermine partial decisions made even months prior. They could sit in toyota, honda, nissan....right th ere that ls enough...they not gonna bother with something they couldn't even touch at auto show.

It's bizarre they don't just call this a 2017 model and get some extra mileage out of the 2017 model year rather than cutting 2016 so short.

So does that mean there won't be any CX-9 for the first half of this year? So dealers will only be selling leftover 2015 models from now till summer, anyone know if there's any good deals on new 2015's right now?

You assume a "soccer mom" sitting in a car at an auto show will sell them immediately. Play with gadgets in the car? Most cars electronics are turned off. Seat access for the kids? Sure, I get that, if the kids are there. And yes, I have kids.

Again, what's the point of sitting in a car you can't even buy for 4 months? If someone was looking to buy now, being tempted by something not even on sale is pointless. Bottom line, Mazda isn't losing any sales from the auto show market because there aren't any to be sold yet.

I'm not quote sure how you lose customers that on a car that will not be out for another 4 months....Sitting in one in an auto show does not sell it. Never has. Driving it and actually experiencing it does.

The purpose of an auto show is to see what's out, get an idea of what you like and go to your dealer to drive it. Not put your deposit down on the spot...

Very good points.
Sad some can't see the logic and want to nitpick.

Once they are out...no one will give a damn ...cuz ...they will be available in local stealership that doesn't require tickets, long lines and parking...I've seen countless families obviously shopping for a family car...they didn't sit in mazda...they are not even going to consider it....the real reason is the fact they only have one car available and they don't want it to be scratched or demolished inside...more shows to go to...but in the process they are loosing customers

Man, what is your problem?
Mazda will sell a boatload of the CX 9s no matter WHEN they hit the dealerships.
This cutting edge mid-sized SUV will absolutely put a dent in Highlander and Pilot sales.

My experience with Mazda is that when the vehicles hit they are plentiful.
Witness the CX 3 rollout; plenty of 'em at the dealer I frequent.
You are, IMO, not making a lot of sense whining about these auto shows.

I've been waiting for the new CX-9, but have been test driving other 3-row SUVs to see what everybody else has to offer.
Nothing has been that great so far (Highlander, Durango, Pilot, Traverse). But then I drove a 2017 Santa Fe yesterday and fell in love.
And then I saw a new video posted yesterday of a guy driving the prototype. He said that it is still a harsh ride
with the 20" wheels. That's something that I'm growing tired of in my 2008 CX-9, and was hoping the new one soaked up the bumps better.
I guess I'm getting too old to deal with that stiff of a ride. The Santa Fe was a perfect balance of stiffness and comfort and I'm
probably going to pull the trigger on one. I wish the CX-9 was out so I could compare, but I think I'm making the right choice for my changing tastes.

I do believe that the CX-9 at the autoshows is a prototype and not the production vehicle. In the fast lane youtube channel's snow test of the new CX-9 they mentioned that they were not allow to show the rear interior as the car was a prototype.

They might lose customers because the interior may not be final on the pre-production model at the show. If there's panel gaps, or poor fitting trim pieces, or mis-matched colors, it will turn customers off. There was one car at the Philly auto show last month that had the windows--including the front windshield, tinted so dark, you couldn't even look inside the car at all; it clearly had an unfinished interior.

The press has been pretty positive on the new CX-9; the new auto issue of Consumer Reports lists it as one of 10 cars worth waiting for.

Santa Fe Limited, with middle row captain's chairs, only seats 6. Dealbreaker for me for car pool reasons--otherwise, it would be my top choice.

Interesting...captain seats are deal maker for me. I need 5 seats, 3 of which are occupied by kids car seats so while I need 3 rows, I couldn't care less for 7 seats. I'd MUCH rather had super easy access to 3rd row. To each it's own.

From FEB 2016 US sales results, states that CX-9 will be available SPRING... Read Bullet #4

http://www.mazdausamedia.com/2016-03-01-Mazda-Reports-February-Sales#.VtXG0FSTvyY.facebook

As far as 2015 Models, I have seen up to $8k discounts depending on dealer, so if you want one, time is almost up...

Too bad they did not have a production one for you fondle at your show, bad timing... Has happened to me with MANY different makes and shows, definitely not just a MAZDA thing.

We should be seeing a boat loading up soon from Japan, and give it some time before you see it docked here in the US. I think they are at least a month out from being at a US port, and being shipped around to the dealers.

Sad some don't have imagination and can't see passed their fixed point of view. For a lot of people car shopping is a couple month long pita research process and while everything is being nit picked and compared...it often comes down to trivial things like design or one single cool feature that this car has but other doesn't. Apply your logic to understand that I am not talking about what u would do. I am talking about what some people might do...after seeing 4 other cars at the show and getting good idea what's available...or maybe falling in love in a single feature or two....they might as well pass on one more car....or it might be enough to put mazda as a last dealership on route during weekend shopping. Whatever the reason is....not letting people touch and see puts mazda in a disadvantage compared to other manufacturers. Basic concept of marketing. I hope your logic can grasp that better now. Understand that not all people are car enthusiasts....most aren't. For them it's just another home appliance. Some of them will go to see honda pilot first cuz it had this cool automatic 3rd row access. Maybe they will never make it to mazda showroom because salesman will be convincing enough to sell them the car. The picture is much bigger than your infantile logic...no deposit no sale....right...it's that simple.

Doesn't it have the smallest cargo space behind 3rd row though?

Yeah, it is pretty small, but I rarely use the 3rd row. Once in a great while I have to transport other kids.
Other than that I leave the 3rd row folded down.

Tex, you can get the 40/20/40 split seats in the Limited. The ultimate limited has the captains chairs which is an extra ~$500.

That's not what the Hyundai website says--Limited shows as 6 passenger. But the '17s have an SE Ultimate Package which might be almost as good as the Limited.

These auto shows are really pretty much useless to potential buyers of new models; you can't sit it 'em, drive 'em, or – heck – even touch them.
I'l bet even with the skepticism that generally surrounds a new version of a ve-hick-el, Mazda sells all the CX9s it ships.
Consumer Reports is very impressed with the re-do, and preliminary reviews are very good for the new T 4.
This is going to be a big hit in the hot mid-sized , 3 row, SUV segment.
The car is being shown to, and driven by, some automotive journalists.
Several video reviews are also available.
Plenty of info on the CX9 out there now.
CX 5 sales were way up in January, one of it's best months ever.

True and that might be the reason they don't care to show the car. As u mentioned the whole point of these shows is becoming very vague to me. Now that we know anything and everything from intrawebs

But then I drove a 2017 Santa Fe yesterday and fell in love.

I, too, liked the updates to the Santa Fe. However, I passed on it before because of the 6-seat configuration in the Limited trim (now fixed in the SE Ultimate trim) and the AWD system. I wanted an AWD similar to Acura's SH-AWD and Hyundai's system isn't as capable. The 2016 Pilot is a contender since the i-VTM4 is pretty much the same system as the SH-AWD in the MDX. However, Honda decided to make the Elite trim come in a 6-seat configuration also. With the CX-9 maintaining the 7-seat configuration and the addition of the capable i-ACTIV AWD (very similar to Audi's Quattro Ultra), it just ticks all the boxes for me like it did back in 2010 when I bought our current CX-9.

Honda's Elite is 7 passenger; other trims are 8 passenger. The 3rd row has 3 seatbelts.
