Speed!!!

Ok I just got my protege 5 about two months ago. Soon after my first oil change I decided to see how fast I could get to downtown from the lovely "bubble" that I happen to reside in. Then, an amazing thing happened at 5500 rpm, the throttle response was basically gone at 3/4 throttle. I'm just wondering, what kind of fuel management fixes are there to change that. For the record I think I topped out at 120(I was verrrrry disappointed) but hey, it's only stock anyway, for now. Anyone info would be greatly appreciated.
 
Have only gotten to 125mph in my MP3, as of today it has 12568miles on it. After 120mph it starts crawling but that's just basicly (drag limited). I see that your PR5 is only 2months old and you say u (topped out at 120mph) pretty impressive for the PR5. You might get to 125mph soon or later maybe with 10000 or more miles on it, it's probably still not broken in yet.
 
I've made it up into the 130's with the FS-ZE. After about 125, it starts dragging. You still have to break your's in I think.
 
Thanks for taking the time to respond folks. I just can't tell you how much I love my car(and hate the damn japs for not sending it over to the states with the turbo and awd). But hey, it's not like we can't put that stuff on our cars right? Has anyone heard of a conversion from a p5 to a familia setup? I would give my left shoe for the chance to smoke a wrx off the line. By the way, has anyone encountered issues getting replacement tires for the p5? I happened to blow out both right side tires thanks to some homies rolling 5 deep in the caddy going down the freeway smoking endo and dropping exhaust equipment. Ended up going to some Khumo tires that are 205 45 16's(yes i changed all four). I haven't noticed too big a change in the car other than the tires seem to actually hold better in corners than the dunlops that were stock. I seem to get less roll from the sidewalls than on the dunlops. Long live zoom zoom!

alright, the turbo part isnt too hard but i imagine making our cars awd is a whole nuther animal. i couldnt event start too list all the work involved. another prob. is i dont think our engines could really push four wheels with enouph pep to make it worth it. any thoughts on this anybody.
 
you could do a familia conversion...well minus the AWD and there are some bolt on turbos in the works...basically you'd need to teh the FZ engine and a couple of internals and wa la...actually it's not that simple but you get the point...of course there are other things that you can do for more power...

i wouldn't sweat going 120...you have a new engine...and actually i'm surprised you ran it hard so soon...but the engine just needs to break in...the P5 seems to loosen up after 8k miles or so and the throttle response seems to be a bit better...

At those speeds just make sure there are no police around or you're in for a very big ticket...and at least here in Canada your license would likely be suspended. :(

Seeing as turbos are being mentioned.....this will be a dumb question but would a turbo also improve your top-end speed...I would imagine it would, but ya never know unless you ask.
 
Anytime you increase the power of the engine, ie hp, you will increase its top speed. However, I think areodynamic changes should yield good results as well. I'm pretty sure just lowering your car you should be able to increase your top speed by several mph. Keep in mind, at 120mph, you're moving a lot of air, if you don't beleive me just stick your hand out the window.
 
lol...well I don't know if I'll stick my head out...but sometimes I've stuck my hand out just to catch the air and it's amazing the forces at high speeds....and I agree making the car lower probably would give you a bit more top-end.
 
Top speed is governed (on the Mazda and any car that doesn't have a nanny computer control) by two things. The aerodynamics of the car and the amount of horsepower you have to push the car through the air.

As my MP3 has gotten older (15,600 miles and holding), I've noticed that I can get a few more MPH out of it on the top end (about 123-125). I also notice (on my secret high speed course along the ocean) that the car FEELS like it could go faster and wants to but just can't. I think that without the wing on the trunk and by closing up the grills and fog light openings that you could get a few more MPH out of it. That means a lot of silver tape to do something that few of us have the space to do and no one has the place to do it safely.

Enjoy the great handling on the Pro, especially the MP3. It is great even at legal speeds (ok, above legal speeds, too.:D ) It isn't the straight line racer some want it to be, but it is quick and can lose almost anything in the twisties!
 
The Mp3 is not governered, it's basicly drag limited. My bro has a 97 Accord LX with intake, exhaust,header,springs etc and still can't break the (113mph) mark where the governer is at. His car stalls and the car jumps so the engine shutsdown, now that's a governer, if your idle stays at the same speed and won't go any further for awhile then that's (drag limited).
 
Your bro has all those mods and cant break 113mph? Are u sure he just doesnt drive it past that point? Makes me think i got him in the 1/4 mile.:p :D
 
I don't know bro but i remember when all he had was just an AEM cai, i smoked him pretty bad from take off then he then later on when he added those mods he put on his Accord LX he kept up during taking off so he actually thought his top end would increase but unfortunately it didn't, cause we went on the freeway like he wanted but damm i had my girl and her friend in the car but he was by himself i just punched it off the ramp going down he caught up pretty damm fast thought he was going to pass me cause we were already at 105mph then he came up closer to my back door already at 110mph then i just started pulling away couple seconds later, then notice he jump behind me trying to get power but i guess his governer kicked in. i did about 120-122mph let off, got off the next exit then we pulled over at fasttrip gas station, with a smile on my face i said what happend i thought u could take me like i said, but i said nohh j/k i know bro your governer man u need to get a chip for that. He said i know that and cam gears is my next mod. But i know if his car didn't have a governer and if his car was drag limited to exceed the 120-125mph mark, he woulda got there alot faster than i did.
