Speaker Sizes, Harnesses and Kits of all Mazdas

Umm. How about starting a new thread...or better yet use the search feature. Could a Mod break this off?

I'm assuming you purchased this component set:
http://www.woofersetc.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1090
These are 6.5" speakers (I thought you had 6"x5" speakers for a second) and to install them in the Protege5 you will have to make a 6"x8" to 6.5" baffle.

The one shown above was made out of 1/2" MDF (available at Home Depot).

The tweeters can be installed in several places. If you have the 6-speaker setup with tweeters near the side mirrors you can just install them there (I think this was a 2002.5-2003 only feature). Otherwise you can drill a hole in that panel by the mirror to mount the tweeter, drill a hole in the door panel just above the speaker opening to mount the tweeter, or make a bracket to suspend the tweeter over the woofer.

The crossover can be mounted to the door just below the window switches. There is some empty space there that works great for small crossovers).

Metra Kit 99-7505

99-7505.jpg

This kit is not listed in the first post although I have seen references on the web that it works with most all Double-Din Mazdas including the Protege. Has anyone attempted it? If it fits properly, I may buy one to see if I can hack it up and use it to mount a touch-screen without modifying the factory panel.

Both of these sites claim it works with all 94+ double din mazdas...

Just installed an Eclipse CD3000 in my 3. One cool built-in feature of the CD3000 is that you can reconnect the steering wheel audio controls to the deck and continue using them. I just need to know which of the wires on the factory radio harness are the leads for the steering controls. Anyone have any ideas? Thought i'd ask before i pull out the volt meter...

Metra kits

Some great information here so I thought I'd contribute for kits for aftermarket HUs in Mazda 3s. IMO Metra > Scosche, I think it's worth an extra $10..

Here are the 3 base products you might need, and where you can get em all in one place for under 40$ shipped:

$16 - Dash kit - 99-7504 (This one has the accessory slot under the HU, bringing the unit closer to eye level, while the scosche is vice versa)
http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/99-7504.html

$8 - Harness - 70-7903

$5 - Speaker adapter - 82-5600 (5 1/4 or 6 1/2 speaker to a Ford 6 x 8)
http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/82-5600.html

It was $39.50 shipped to me in AZ.

Also check this puppy out:
http://www.cardomain.com/item/PERPESWIX?vq_id=none

It hooks into your steering wheel audio controls and spits em out via IR to your deck. You program it with your decks remote to match signals to keypresses, then mount the kit somewhere pointed at your HU. They also make a few models for newer HUs that have direct remote plugs in the back.

Thanks 1sty and 2003newlyack

Just did 1st install on '02 P5 thanks to 1sty (kits/gear) and 2003newlyack (dash seperation) Time spent in car on install 30min! Also used the box from a 2000 Protege mined from junk yard $10 and it works/looks great! Finally, used Best Kit P/N BHA7902 and just pulled the blue PWR ANT pigtail and pin and stuck it back into pin 11 for the dim feature! Thanks again. Image shows the 2000 Protege Sedan vs the P5 (on right)

This may sound kinda noobish, but what exactly has to be done to the rain gard if wanting to keep it? Plus is there any benefits/disadvantages to removing it?

You just have to pull the rain guard off the stock speaker and stick it back into the opening. I usually add a little cauck or silicone around the edge to keep a tight seal with the door.

The reason you want to keep it is to prevent rain water from getting onto the back of your speakers. Water will come in from the window and drip down. This is normal...which is why there is a rain guard on the stock speaker. If you let your speakers get wet the tinsel leads that connect the speaker wire posts to the voice coil may rust and eventually break off. You also risk shorting out the speaker (and thus shorting out the amplifier) if the water creates a connection between the positive and negative post.

Called my local Mazda dealer today. I hoped to buy the pocket but forget about for that price.:bs:

Stock MP3 and MSP Pocket: BJ1H-66-9MO ($124.98)
Stock MP3 and MSP Support Bar: TA06-66-9B1 (17.89)

The "whole" kit only consists of the pocket, support bar, and 2 screws.

Yeah, if you can buy one from a board member it is a nice looking pocket...but forget about buying it from the dealer. $125 for piece of plastic. Umm..no.

1sty, can you get the speaker size for a 1998 Protege Sedan 128? Or specify which 1998-2000 or 1995-1998 sedan the 128 goes under?

Looking for the specs on the Head unit of the Mazda5

My guess is that it has the 6.5" front speakers although I am not sure.
Since you will have to do it any ways to install them, just take off the door panel now and take a look.

I am not sure asi Have not seen one yet. My guess is that there is not an external amp as there is no Bose package but I could be wrong. Being a factory deck...probably 10 watts per channel. Either way its only a 4 channel system as the 5th/6th speakers are mostly likely paralleled tweeters.
