I recently bought a 2008 CX-9 with only one smart key, and would like to have a spare key made. Is it possible to buy and program just a chipped cut key with out having to spend the money for a new smart key card? The dealer has never done it and is not sure it will work.

Spare Key - According to the '08 manual....

If you have a problem with the
immobilizer system or the key, consult an
Authorized Mazda Dealer.

NOTE

l The keys carry a unique electronic code.
For this reason, and to assure your safety, obtaining replacement key requires some waiting time. They are only available through an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

l Always keep a spare key, in case one is lost.
If a key is lost, contact an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.

l If you lose a key, an Authorized Mazda Dealer will reset the electronic codes of your remaining keys and immobilizer system. Bring all the remaining keys to an Authorized Mazda Dealer to reset.

Starting the vehicle with a key that has not been reset is not possible.

dvz461,
Better get a second set of key. If you lose your remaining and only key, it will cost you up to $800-$1000 to replace the ECU and keys together.
Dealer has to program the second key for you. If you have two set of keys, you can program a 3rd one yourself. This is, of course, for security
reason (we don't want to valet boys to duplicate our keys, do we?).
