2003 Mazdaspeed Protege
Earlier this week I was driving normal and then i noticed the rpm going lower at a stop light. When the light turned green, i accelerated but the car was fighting it. It seemed like it didnt wanna accelerate. When I changed the gears it felt normal but as soon as i hit 2500rpm-3000rpm the car wud fight back again. After driving almost a half a mile, the car started to dye. I pulled over on the shoulder. I tried to start it then it wud start but the rpms would be going up then down then it would die unless i had it over 4000rpm. It's sooo strange. What do you think it can be? Please help. My car is lightly modded with built-ons.

This happened to me earlier this week. I also got the p0102 Cel, I started changing my plugs, bought new MAF, leaked tested and cleaned the EGR, but the CEL didn't go away. So, I went and unplugged the AFC and it everything went back to normal. When the problem started my afr was reading around 10.3 at idle, now it's back to 14.7-15.2. Do you have any gauges? and what are their reading? Do you have a CEL?

Where is the AFC located on our cars? and is that an air flow converter or an air fuel controller? It did, but I didnt have a computer to read it. its at the shop now.

He is talking about the piggyback split second afc... Make sure all of your intercooler pipes are tight and no air is coming out.

Lol. Yeah, Im gonna see if it can get fixed then sell it. If it cant get fixed then I'm just gonna trade it in to the dealer and get a newer car. Either a Mazda3 Hatchback or a Scion tc.

Coilpacks? Mine did this to but kinda.went away. You do need to unplug.your battery once a month or so.

Sounds like a coilpack to me as well, pretty common on proteges and it explains the problems you were having before.

The coilpack was fixed. One of the wires connecting to it was loose but it was connected and tightened and then car worked perfectly. Now, the car wont even stay on past 5 seconds. I turn it on and it dies instantly. Any suggestions?

I'm going to concur that this sounds like an ignition problem. A bad coil pack will cause two of your plugs not to fire, which makes it darn near impossible for your engine to run. New ones can cost ~$20. I keep a spare in my trunk at all times because they tend to fail when you least expect it! 140,000 miles in, and I've probably had 4-5 coil packs in all

Voila*
Good chance it was dirty, you should try to clean it before you drop $150 on a new one.

Lol. my bad. Voila. Im gonna clean it on saturday, if it doesnt work then im just gonna buy a new one.
