So my HiBoost 2.0 Budget kit came today

:
2003 Protege ES-T
came with a master power T3/TO4E, and a tial 38mm WG. didn't expect it to be here in 2 months. now i gotta order a BOV and some other little things. hopefully i'll install it next weekend or the one after. yay :)

awesome dude!! i cant wait to save up enough to afford it.... have you decided which ECU and BOV are you going to run? Is it worth it to spend $1k less and try to look for your own ECU and BOV? i know i want to get the Greddy type RS to get the Turkey sound :3

SS FTC on the stock ecu and a synapse engineering synchronic bov. theres a lot of unfinished stuff in the kit. downpipe doesn't have O2 sensor bungs, the intake pipe doesn't have a nipple for the breather tube to the valve cover, or a hole for the IAT, and no instructions. lol. theres probably more but i don't remember or i won't find out till i go to install it. also the oil drain is a rubber hose with hose clamps and not braided SS. it did come with a cast intake pipe with a greddy bov flange on it tho. now i just gotta find some screws that'll fit since the synchronic adapter flange didn't come with any. and also came with a straight neck thermostat housing so thats nice.,

SS FTC was 630, BOV with adapter flange and anti-stall valve kit was $290. i wanted to attempt to be able to pass emissions as long as the techs look the other way during a visual inspection

and you still need to get vacuum hose and T's

so the full kit, unlike the budget kit, would include everything you think you're missing? are you manual or auto...

i do not understand. is the budget kit from hiboost the same thing as the mazdaspeed turbo upgrade kit? because you say you got a external wastegate and a t3/to4e turbo and that is what comes in the upgrade kit.

the hiboost kit comes with a vf22 turbo with internal wastegate, so the hiboost kit that is $3800 compared to the $2500 is not just the concern for engine managment and a blow off valve, the kits come with completely different components.

what turbo puts out more power, the vf22 or the t3/to4e?

All you would need to do is drill a hole in the oil pan for the return line fitting...And a new clutch trust me!

supposedly the full kit includes everything needed to install it. you shouldn't have to buy anything extra. i'm manual.

most of the s*** said protege 5 so i dunno if it's the upgrade kit. i got it through PG. but hiboost doesn't have any info on the differences either. and they still havn't returned any of my emails from months ago.

well yeah you gotta drill a hole in the pan with either kit. but the full kit was showing braided SS line.

yeah i got the 2.0 complete kit about 3 months ago through pg and it was supposed to come with the vf22. but instead i got the t3/to4e and the tial 38mm wg. im not complaining though i love it. the complete kit comes with most of the missing components mentioned above, but the downpipe still doesnt have the hole for the o2 drilled.

You don't use the second 02 just leave it unplugged with the Haltech and most piggybacks anyway. The primary 02 bung is in the turbo manifold S-pipe. That's all you need until inspection, then you'll need an 02 bung after the cat or with a non-fowler if you don't have a cat.

I just gotta as why such a big turbo?

That thing is gonna take hella long time to spool up.

I remember a guy with an mp3 and that turbo..thing didn't hit full boost till 4500rpms.

I know when I was looking to replace my VF22 Juan said IHI just raised all their prices so they were supposed to be switching over to T3/4!? I love when my boost sets in with the IHI but I will be upgrading down the road to maybe a 3071 or similar to keep the quick spool up compared to going too big!

^^ cuz i thought it was gonna be a VF22. apparently hiboost decided to go with a different turbo and not let anyone know.

It sux they decided to just give you the larger size w/out asking.

I ran 2 types of turbo's on my old p5.

T3/T4 which hit full boost around 3600-3800rpms.
This setup was good for drag.

Later on i switched to IHI turbo which spool up so much quicker but lacked the punch that the t3/t4 had.

I suggest going with 3" turbo back exhaust b/c anything less would be serious restriction on getting that bad boy to spool up.

At one point i was running exhaust cutout and that turbo spooled up almost instantly.

Just couldn't control the boost very well.

i have the hiboost manifold with the td04-13t turbo instead of the sti vf22 turbo. is the vf22 that much bigger than the wrx turbo? is it too big for the stock engine?

sorry for thread jacking

damn, yeah i was looking for a broader powerband and quicker spool than top end. oh well at least with the manifold and downpipe i got it leaves my options open without having to buy a new manifold and DP like if you had the IHI. but i cannot find any info on this master power turbo, i don't even know if it's ball bearing or not.

as far as a 3" turbo back i'm not lookin for anything too "loud" or obnoxious when just cruising. the obx header, 2.5 midpipe and RB catback right now is pretty damn quiet when cruising. you can hold a conversation no problem. what is your opinion on an exhaust?

The VF22 was used in some other spec STI. It's smaller than a 28rs...I hit 14psi at around 3500 with 2.5 catless. I'm about to do an electric cutout and hopefully 20psi. What kind of spikes were you seeing?

the powermaster house turbo is not ball-bearing you could always switch to t3/t4 ball-bearing that'll spool up pretty fast

I rant similar NA setup long time ago before people started to turbo protege's.

I was running OBX header...no cats and a custom 2.5" cat back exhaust.
I was also running nitrous on that setup.

The exhaust was very loud with the setup listed above. i normally had my silencer in the exhaust unless i was planning on going racing.

yes i was able to hold a conversation..but the droning (SP?) got really annoying on long trips. Once i had the turbo kit on..i removed the silencer completely.

One time, i had to drive my mom somewhere so i threw on the silencer and left it on a couple days.

The car def felt much slower due to the back pressure it created.

I had the wastegate set at 8psi but it would normally spike to 10 and drop to around 8psi to redline.

Once i had the cutout on i saw some crazy spikes. It all depended on how hard i launched the car.

Once time i really launched the car and saw a spike around 15psi.

Be sure to be careful as it's quite easy to overboost with a cutout.
