My RX7 recently had a rebuild on the stock motor and turbos and now they smoke. The guy told me they were supposed to smoke for alittle bit until they break in. Is this true or is he just saying that? cause it really is smoking alot.

thanks

What color smoke? How much is a lot (a puff every now and then when on/off the gas or "smoking out the ghetto" volumes)? I have never seen or heard of a rebuilt rotary smoking, so I'd be cautious.

I am assuming it is a 93-95 RX-7, since you said "turbos" and the only other gen to have a turbo motor was the second gen and it had a single turbo.

Blue smoke = Oil
White smoke (steam) = coolant
Black smoke = running rich
Assuming it's blue smoke (oil)...I've never heard of a rebuild smoking during the break-in, but it may be possible. I think it's at least as likely that the source of the smoke is the turbos, not the the engine.

yeah, sorry, its a 93. the guy told me it was the turbos. he said the "seals have to swell" i brought it out to my friends shop and he said its actually oil dumping into the turbos. but he doesnt know anything about rotarys and doesnt want to give me any wrong info. It also only smokes when I go into high RPMs which is what leads me to believe its the turbos not the motor.

seals have to "swell"?? (omg) That just doesn't sound right to me.

Well, try looking for more info from the fd(your gen RX-7) guys on www.rx7club.com .
But for God's sake, search before you ask outright, cuz they are search button nazis.

:)

Well I searched but its tough to find anytihng on there cause just about all of the cars on there seem to smoke in one way or another.

But one guy did mention he just rebuilt his motor and said " i havent had it running long enough for the cloud of smoke to go away, but soon enough." so... maybe its just something that happens? I don't know...

this is what happened with my FC..it was sitting for god knows how long, and when I bought it and started, my whole neighborhod hated me.

It all depends what's the color of the smoke. If it stinks (burned) and it's dark gray you need to get new cats, if it's white then who ever did the rebuilt didn't do a good job....(cheers)

My friend says this:

There should be a short time that the motor smokes after a rebuild. If it still smokes for an excessive amount of time after the rebuild then the oil control o-rings are shot. The person that built the motor probably didn't replace the oil control o-ring springs or just didn't replace the rings at all. Depending on the places that he got the parts from he might not have put them in correctly. This happens a lot with the viton oil rings from atkins.
