Shot Peening Gears?

Hey,

has anyone taken out the gears from their gear box and had them shot peened?

tell us the details...cost etc......i'm sure people will have to start looking at this seriously since the boost levels are continually being raised....

All shot peening does is remove any micro-cracks and scratches that, if put under load or stress, would translate into broken parts.

Where I work we shotpeen large steel beams, and steel shafts for our highway machinery. (we actually make a piece of very pure steel, 144" x 24" x 7" thick vibrate and bend, but thats another story.

It does not however actually make the object harder, or stronger to any great effect.

really? i was under the impression that shot peening is a cold treatment (metal is cold for those that dont know this) which was similar in idea to forging. i know it'll never result in as strong a product as new material being made up and having it forged, but i thought it would help to some degree

anyway, removing micro-cracks would be a good thing strength wise anyway wouldnt it?

sure, every crack and scratch is a stess riser, a potential breaking point.

all they do in the shot peening process is to bombard the object with small ball berrings, or bb's.

yeah that's what i thought...the small bb's shot at very high speeds is vaguely similar to forging...lots of pressure exerted over a small area
