Rusted rotors

Here's mine after I sprayed with some VHT High temp caliper paint. Color: Aluminum. Canadians can get it at Canadian Tire, for $9/can

all I did was cut a piece of Card board like this picture. And I covered the car up like crazy as it was really windy out and I have no intention of ruining my zaino. I covered it a lot more then what the picture indicated, and I used some tape on the rotor to get rid of some gaps where the paint could get on the rotor.

Some paint got on the rotors, I have not moved the car yet, letting is sit overnight. I scraped what I could off with a straight blade, and it came off really easy. Once I drive and hit the brakes, it should all be sweet.

Here's an rough idea of what I did.

Remember to rotate your wheels so you can get all around the hubs as the calipers will cover a small portion. And the fronts are a lot smaller then the rear so you'll need a 2nd piece of card board to make a cut out for the front.

Oh, and I HATE THE F'N GOD DAMN SON OF A @#$!@$#%!@#$%%@ WHEEL LOCKS!!!!

It takes two mins to get 4 lugs off, and another 45 mins to get one damn wheel lock off. The damn key just slips and slips. And I have 2 keys! I'm getting rid of them this week. Never again and I'm killing my back getting those pieces of s*** off my car.

I had my wheel off today ready to paint the hubs but I wanted to remove the caliper and slip the rotor off to paint. I couldn't figure out how to remove the caliper though and never got to doing it. I'm not mechanically inclined and I don't want to mess up something as important as my brakes.

I think I might just do what you did with the cardboard. Newf, Did you get paint on the bolts that the lugs screw on? Or did you tape those off?

Nice job, btw.

I did get some paint on the lug bolts. TApe them up, problem solved. 2 mins work.

remember, you can turn the hub so you can paint all the way around. There is no need to take off the caliper.

You guys grinding off the rust or painting over? Inquiring minds want to know. 3M makes a ni-ice paint remover wheel that slips into the drill and would take that down to bare metal pretty quickly, available at WallyMart for under $10.

The attached files show what I did for my part. Yes I got the rust out, I don't expect it to come back soon. I used exactly the same paint as Newf did and it worked great. Because I had the caliper mount braket off I painted it as well. The result is damn nice IMO.

It's a good thing I inspected the calipers, as one had a cracked rubber on the downward sliding bolt and a lot of rust was in there. It would have stick in next winter. Now it's changed.

oops forgot a real shot of the hub. Took this before she was washed. Excuse the dirt

When I did the second side, I never even really taped anything off. The car was covered in garbage bags, but I said eff it. Just sprayed away, and covered the suspension with a rag a bit. The nozzle on the can was such that I could aim it pretty good and not worry. The paint I got on the rotors, I just scraped it off before it was completely dry, VERY carefully. And as for the rest, I just hit the brakes a but 1st time I drove and it was all gone.

Warning about this VHT stuff, let it dry a LONG time. Overnight AT LEAST.

no primer, just cleaned them off, little bit of sanding, and sprayed paint.

Listen. No matter how good of a job you do, the rust WILL come back. I did my mp3 extremely well, took my time did everything by the book. Took my 8 hours one day to do 5 coats on 4 calipers with G2 caliper paint that costed me about 50 US bucks. Lasted 1 yr, and the rust came back.

Not doing that no more. few bucks a can for high temp paint. 2 hours, done. Freshen it up every spring with a light coat. I did a color that's close to stock, so it was much easier to do. Changing the color would involve a little more work, and more care. If I scratch my silver calipers now, or if they peel, guess what, it's silver under neath. No big deal.

alright, no G2 then. thanks newf. one more question, would it matter if i covered the bolts or not? wouldn't the lugs just cover them up when the rims go on? just curious, i'll still cover them. thanks

zinc-coated rotors under warranty! The rust will not appear again!
I wish, that'll never happen for me :(

as for the lugs. Throw some tape over them. If anything just because it only takes 2 mins and you won't have to worry about the lugs drying onto the paint. Of course I didn't do this....bad I know, but I got very little on the front where the lugs are. I did the inside only.

The g2 paint is REALLY good. When it dries, it is amazingly smooth, and super glossy. Very nice paint for sure. But, it did peel on my car almost a year later. I am convinced it was our wonderful winters that did it, and if the car was stored it would have lasted a long time.

hm...yeh i was gonna get it, but since i want black calipers and hubs now, i'm just gonna stick with the cheap stuff. how did you guys clean the hubs? i know i'm supposed to use brake cleaner on the calipers, but what about the hubs? just water and steel wool? thanks
