Rusted rotors

Do you have pics of them with the black paint?
here, just took one:

That looks good. I'm still deciding between silver and black. I think I'll go with black with my black mica car...

How hard is it to get them off to paint. I want to do this very soon, the rust is such an eye-sore.

Don't even need to take them off to paint them. Just take off wheel, spray paint on. The only thing to be careful about is try to put up some sort of guard against overspray getting onto the car itself.

I don't have to remove the brake pads or worry about hiting the rotors themselves? I imagine the rotors will get cleaned the first time I hit the brake pedal but I just want to make sure I don't do something that will F them up.

Also, what is the best way to get the rust off before I paint? Steel wool?

Na, not really. I just used a little bit of care to try not to get too much paint on the calipers, but a little paint on those and the back of the pads isn't going to hurt anything. As far as the rotors go, that doesn't matter either; if you use high-temp paint (which you should), it will be VERY thin and runny, so you will get some on the face of the rotors. I just took a dry paper towel and wiped off some of the paint that ran down onto the rotor's face - just to get some of it off of there. A little paint on the rotor face isn't going to hurt anything - the pads will scrape that right off anyway. I have painted my rotor hubs 3 times already - once when the rust was pi$$ing me off, again when I put on my winter tires, and again when I put my summer tires back on. It didn't really need to be painted that many times, but a fresh coat just made it look that much sharper.

As far as removing the rust from the rotors before you start, I don't know what to suggest. I just painted right over the top of the rust. Works plenty good for me.

A wire brush will get the rust off. If you want to do it right prime it before you paint it. Primer sticks better to metal, and paint sticks better to primer. If you are worried about getting paint everywhere just use masking tape and cardboard.

dude!

u guys, it's not that hard to take the disks off.
do it right.
u need to wire-brush/sand-paper all the rust off before u paint.
otherwise the rust will come back.

do it once, do it right.

How do I get them off? I want to get them off the car, scrape the rust off, prime them, paint them. I'm sure it's not difficult but I've never done it. It's not something I want to mess up. I'm patient and like to get things done correctly. :)

It's not worth doing right in my opinion. By the time the rust comes back from just painting over it, it'll be time for new rotors anyway. Just painting over it gives good results and it's laughably easy and quick. But, do what you want I guess.

take the wheel off, unscrew the caliper and move it to the side, pull the disk off.

I'm gonna have to get on this soon. So the rotors themselves are only secured onto the car by the caliper and the wheel? and what is the caliper screwed on to? sry bout the noob questions.

dont forget to tape off the breaking surface of the rotor.....the total time to do this is about 1 hour for 3 coats of paint. it was the first thing i did when i bought my MSP

Wow, the disc really just slides off? I had no idea it was so easy. This will make a good weekend project this week or next.
