does anyone else notice rust on their rotors after it rains? i believe its rust, its reddish orange spots, but it forms really quickly and rubs off rather easily. also, is this dangerious and and is htere anything i can do about it?

Are you talking about rust on the rotor surface or the hub of the rotor? The rust collected overnight is normal, since the rotor surface is exposed metal. The rust on the rotor hub is not correct and Mazda has issued a fix to the dealer. (Sand and paint with a high-temp paint.)

What is the diff??? All I know is my disks are REALLY rusty. Looks like the car is 10 years old....

Technical Service Bulliten. It mean's it's not imparitive to the saftey of the vehicle. Go ahead and mention it to the dealer, I plan on doing it when I go up there next.

Any more info on this TSB? What exactly is the dealer required to do?

Rust on the rotors is normal, this is common knowledge and not a problem. The dealer will think you are an idiot for asking about it.

I think that what we are discussing is the rust on the HUB of the rotor, not rust that happens to the braking surface of the rotor overnight or when it sits for a few days. THAT is normal. The rust on the hub of the rotor is not and for THAT Mazda has issued a TSB to the dealers allowing them to charge the company for sanding down the hub and repainting it with a hi-temp paint.

Yes indeed. I just assumed that's what he was talking about.

So does this mean the dealer is required to do this, or it is an option to do this? Is there a web site for more info?

The dealer is supposed to sand the hubs and re-pain them with a hi-temp paint. They will probably not do this unless you ask.

Okay, I know I'm not the only one sitting here and thinking... What the hell is a hub.... So I guess I'm the only one with enough balls to come out and ask, and get laughed at and pointed at for my lack of knowledge.... Any pics?? :D :D

has anyone had any dealer experience with this issue?

i had my oil changed today, and complained about the rusty rotor hubs at the same time. the service guy was quite argumentative that the rust was normal and he hadn't heard of any TSB on the topic. i asked if they had a computer linked to the internet and he went quiet when i downloaded the rusty rotor hub TSB. he said he'll contact mazda canada and get back to me.

this is the link i'm referring to:

http://web2.airmail.net/emann/protegefaq/tsb/

click on "third generation" protege, and then check out TSB MT0003559 "rust on brake rotor hubs".

any experience with this one?
