Road & Track - Aerio SX vs. Protege'5

Hey everyone,

I just received the August 2002 issue of Road & Track. They have a one page article on the new Suzuki Aerio SX and overall they seemed to like the car. But I know not everyone subscribes to Road & Track so I will quote the best line in the whole article.

"And while the Aerio is no Protege'5 in terms of handling dynamics, it is agile enough to be fun..."

Why do I keep buying Mazdas you ask? They handle great and they are a lot of fun to drive!

Please don't buy a Suzuki!

I had a Suzuki, and believe me, their old solgan, "engineering beyond believe" is true, the engineering was unbelievablily bad. I had a piston failure 4 months after the warranties wore off, had to get an used engine, don't have to tell you, it was expensive.

that engineering seems great to me... they engineered it to fail right when the warranty was over.

Suzuki does make great bikes. They also make the Metro.

Did they mention that Aerio's are boxy, cheesy and spare in the interior, tinny, and fugly?

cant believe R&T had the nerve to even compare the Aerio with the P5..a more likely matchup wouldve been the Aerio with a Focus 5door hatch..

It wasn't really a comparison test. It was more a review of the Areola or whatever its called. (Hey that name might have worked
better - lol) But of course they had to mention other cars that were technically in the same class as the Suzuki. Even though we all know that certain ones like the P5 have it completely outclassed.

Reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield line from Back to School where he was trying to get a date with an attractive college professor who was always busy because she had to teach - "well then call me sometime when you have no class"

not to sound like an ass, but i just read that page review last night, and they said "protege" not "protege5". sorry.

True...but as long as we are picking nits here. Did you see earlier in the article in the second column where they specifically mentioned the "Toyota Matrix or Mazda Protege'5" when referring to cargo volume?

Obviously they are comparing 5-door wagonoids to 5-door wagonoids. So in the line about handling I list two possible scenarios:

1 - They suddenly decided to switch at the end of the article and compare a 5-door vehicle to a 2 or 4 door Protege', or...

2 - The copy editor made a mistake and left out the "5" and they went to press before anyone caught the mistake?

You be the judge...

I agree, I think they must be talking about the P5.
