Ricktalife's EPIC fails and maybe a build thread too

Alright so to start this off I will just list all the problems I am trying to address at the moment. Anybody may chime in with suggested replacement parts / fixes.

I will have the car looked over for:

1. Broken motor mounts
2. Suspension issues
3. Vacuum leaks
4. Brakes
5. Setting up a basic tune using the Stock Super Map
6. Clean the EGR
7. Inspect spark plugs
8. Inspect IAC (throttle seems to be sticking, but not the actual pedal)
9. Inspect PCV and replace with Millenia or Purolator if necessary

I am looking for suggestions and input on the items mentioned above so I can have the car running in tip top shape before I bother with my FMIC and tune the car thoroughly.

gt28rs (or larger)... You've got more than everything else you need to run it!

Lol yea wouldn't that be nice. But the nice thing is that these motors don't require a bigger turbo to go pop. I've already got a boost controller, so I just have to crank it up to 14 psi and I'm golden for about half a mile.

Got a good deal on a Perrin fuel rail, so I bought it. Then I sold my Eibach springs to make up for it lol. I feel like I'm running a parts warehouse.

EMS - 4 is easy to hook up man, read their instruction and play with software ... if only i had funds to get it now I'd have it running asap.

Well I suppose I'll just go to radio shack and look for this tool that helps remove the terminals. I can't seem to get any help from local shops no matter how hard I try. Apparently they don't like to make money when they have to deal with an unfamiliar car.

Call Dino/speedcircuit.net , not sure if he knows AEM/EMS-4 but at least he knows MSP's

If I can't figure something out soon I may try to work something out with him or someone else that has experience with our car. I just don't have a lot of free time to be driving that far since I work full time and go to school. There is a tuner shop in York that I went to when I first bought the car so I will try giving them a call. They are only about 30 minutes from me.

In other news, I received a Perrin fuel rail in the mail yesterday. It's pretty sexy and I wasn't going to bother getting one but it was too good of a deal to pass up. Some more blue for my engine bay :)

Well I decided that I'm just going to shell out the cash and have Sam from Crossover wire it for me. Then once I get it back I can bring everything to a local tuner shop so they can't make up some bulls*** like "we don't have experience with Mazda's" because all the wiring will be finished. As long as they have experience with tuning the AEM units, that's all they need.

I bought it from Sandspeed during his partout, I think I paid about $850 for the unit and harness since they were still BNIB.

Well I want to make sure it is done right this time and since Sam knows what he is doing with these cars, I would much rather pay him than a shop that doesn't specialize in Mazda's. The last thing I need is somebody ******* up my $225 extension harness and further delaying this drawn out process. I'm bogging down like crazy every time I hit boost, which I'm sure cannot be good for my car. Basically I've been running around without boost for as long as I can remember.

If anybody learns anything from this thread, I think it would be to set your priorities. I made a big mistake not getting a good tune set up before throwing on all of these modifications. Not saying I should have wasted money on a dyno tune, but at least a basic street tune that I could keep altering as each mod went on.

Ya true that. Its just that ems costs a shitload of money ontop of building the motor plus install

Well everything is set to go with the AEM, I just have to ship it out to Sam. Hopefully I will have time to take care of that tomorrow because it's a real pain the the dick driving my car with this horrible tune. Not to mention I'm using about twice as much fuel as I should be.

they call that protecting your investment.

ya i understand that. i almost wanna wait tell i can afford an ems to even install my forged motor. I might wait or i heard of a shop here that can modify my computer to make it able to tune inhouse.

very unlikely that will work on the MSPs computer... I'm not saying don't try, but I am saying don't get your heart set on it.

EMS is still at Sam's shop. He messaged me a few nights ago and informed me that because I have a mini harness (you supply the wiring) it would cost a lot more to fabricate. Also I was under the impression that the unit had an internal map sensor like the FIC, but that is not the case. So in a nutshell, I just dropped another $380 on a map sensor and full harness to make this kit complete. I was going to just bag the idea and go with a Haltech, but he gave me a quote on that fully wired and it's really not much cheaper than my setup so I'm just going to keep the AEM.

To those who might be considering the EMS-4, be aware that it is not as cheap as you may think. To make a full kit you will spend just as much if not more than the Haltech Sprint 500. I am hoping that the outcome will justify the road I took to get there.

The EMS-4 is now prewired with a full harness and 3 bar map sensor. Should arrive at my house via FedEx sometime tomorrow. Now I need to buy a new netbook / laptop so I can set it up. Though I don't have a timing light at my disposal, so maybe I'd be better off paying a shop for a base map.
