Resuming Playback with 2014 CX-5 GT Tech Stereo and other issues

How can I re-install or flash the 4.4.2 update? I would like this feature to work and its very frustrating to see people with the same phone and car having it work but told mine is incompatible when I know its not! Edit- I updated the software again and still don't have text messaging. I don't think its my phone. I tried a Droid 3 and that does not work either.

Well, in my case I was having problems updating my phone to 4.4.2 because I had previously rooted it and then un-rooted it so the download kept failing. I took it to an AT&T specialist store where they completely wiped everything on the phone and put on the new software on what was at that point a factory new phone, so that might have had something to do with it as well. The only thing I can suggest to you is to do a factory reset of your phone (after backing everything important up) and seeing if that does the trick.

My phone had been rooted previously. I did a a full re-install over Kies and it took forever and I am still setting up my Apps etc even though I backed up it didn't re-enter all my passwords and customizations etc. After all the effort I still don't have Text messaging. My phone is a Galaxy S4 on Verizon with 4.4.2 and Mazda says its "not compatible" which is not true. I have fingers crossed a new bluetooth module they ordered will fix the problem.

Looks like the fix is out with dealers now. At least in NZ

Hi All,

Last week I was contacted by my trusty mate at Mazda Head Office in NZ. He explained that the replacement modules had arrived and he had one reserved for my CX-9. See the attached photo I took of this Bluetooth module. It has the following printed on it:

BLUETOOTH QD ID B017721
P/N 2145650-2
Date: 02 April 2014

As soon as I picked up my car I tried my iPod Classic 120GB 6th Gen.

On the first plugin, it started from the letter A. thereafter, it continues where it stops, thats right - I unplugged it, turned off the car for 5 minutes and it still started playing where it stopped. It takes about 5 seconds to start playing a collection of about 100GB once you plug it in or start the car. It takes a further 25 minutes to access the menus which is a pain in the ***.

But the best was still to come, I've got an iPhone 5S. I thought I'd give it a try in the USB which enables the centre point bose sound which is noticeably better than bluetooth audio. Well it worked really well, I selected a song on the phone, plugged it in and it continued playing the song I had chosen. No delays or waiting for the iPod loading spinning wheel. Amazing how this has improved the overall experience in the car. You can change tracks with the steering wheel controls, the songs come up on the screen correctly, and you can choose songs via the phone which also speeds things up.

This is Mazdas fix we've been waiting for. It's not a complete fix but I would say it's a 80% improvement.

Questions, Please ask..

Very nice....so is there a TSB or anything for us to get on the list for replacement modules?

Not sure. It is a cut and paste from mazdafroum.com. But I read somebody commenting about contacting mazda usa and they told all the owners will be infrormed. Please update anybody have further infomation.

Well, I am now 9d into owning my CX-5, and have decided this iPod "connectivity" issue is truly absurd. I thought I could accept the "slight inconvenience" of having to wait a minute (or two) for the system to "read" the iPod (yet, again) when I turn on the car, and to then have to point a few times until I get to my playlist of choice. But, no. This is BS.

So, I just got off the phone with Mazda Customer Service. Wow.

I mentioned my audio system behavior to the rep, and he stated he is "aware of this" and that the Mazda engineers "designed" it this way, and he understands that a "software update is on the way," though he has no idea when or how its availability will be shared with the owners. It was important to him that I not call it an "issue," as that implied there was something wrong with the iPod integration.

He then recommended I take my CX-5 to a Mazda Service Center to have the technician "verify the behavior" so they can confirm my experience, "since we rely on the service centers" to substantiate customer complaints. I told him I thought this was absurd, since he just told me that the system was operating "as designed." He proceeded to, again, state that he can't predict when the upgrade will be released. I asked him when he first heard about the update, and he thinks it was "a few months ago."

Sigh. I still love the car.

I have owned my CX5 for almost a year now and I have given up - I learned from this experience to never let my wife test drive a car, I "liked" the car but I loved another one. My wife was adamant that I get this car, so I blame it on her, that is when the fighting started... lol - Mazda has known about this for more than 2 years but keeps mouthing off to their customers that this was designed that way. It does not limit the way I drive but there are days I want to rip the system out... iPod is so slow, USB is just laughable and bluetooth keeps losing connection. The only two things working are AM/FM and the CD player.

Had I known about this issue, I would have test-driven quite a few more cars. I think I will start looking at after-market options.

Take it easy on your wife. ;) I test drove our CX-9 several times before buying it, including bringing my own USB drive with music on it. Everything seemed fine on the test drive. You don't think to check if play resumes where you left off given my 12 year old radio in my other car does that. Issues like these don't really surface until you really start using it.

This doesn't help those who are currently experiencing this issue but at least we can sort of appreciate that Google/Apple are going to mitigate this sort of issue in the future with Android Auto and CarPlay. Can't come soon enough.

Latest response:

Thank you for taking the time to contact Mazda.

We apologize for any inconvenience you have encountered with the iPOD playback function in your 2014 Mazda CX-5. As was previously discussed, with a media device connected to the USB port, your music playlist will start from the beginning each time the vehicle is started. This is considered a normal function of the vehicle infotainment system in reading your digital playback device.

Mazda is committed to constantly improving our products and services and based on our customer feedback, a software update will be made available in the Fall that enhances the compatibility of your Mazda's infotainment system and your media device. Owner's will receive notification in the mail once this update is available at your local Mazda dealership. In the meantime, we continue to encourage our owners to stream their music through either your vehicle’s Bluetooth system or by connecting your iPod through your vehicle’s AUX input.

So now we wait until the Fall. I'm not holding my breath.

Of course streaming from an iPhone via Bluetooth as Mazda recommends has its own issues. Most, but not all the time, the system will resume play after stopping. But when it does resume, it goes back to playing songs in alphabetical order rather than album order or shuffle. And to restart the shuffle, you have to use the voice commands since the on-screen shuffle button is greyed out. And the voice recognition never seems to get it right on the first try, so I just say "Hello dummy" on the first prompt and then "Shuffle all" on the second try and that usually works. And sometimes instead of shuffling all music from my phone, it just shuffles the selected artist. I haven't figured out yet why that happens only part of the time.

But to me these are all fairly minor annoyances, given that in my previous car I had to stream music from the headphone jack on my phone thru a cassette adapter. If these issues were eventually corrected I think my CX-5 experience would be perfect.

I feel the same way. I don't have an iPhone (I have a 160GB iPod Classic). It is fairly easy to just hit the shuffle button and then the "next" button on the screen and off I go -- I like to mix up my songs. I can always select a playlist, if needed, with a couple more hits. I don't drive my car daily or get in and out frequently, or I might be more upset about this. I think the BOSE system sounds pretty good, actually -- it's better than the HK system in our brand-new MINI Cooper S.

Well, I've got the same "absent USB resume" problem, read through some of these threads, and chatted with a few folks at Mazda USA. They're certainly well aware of the problem, and "promise," they really do, that a fix is on the way for my Mazda 6 i Touring.

In the meantime, I've found that if you can remember to hit pause before shutting off the ignition, it remembers the track and position. It also resumes properly from a CD-RW/mp3 data disk. Plus, I can always play into the aux input from a $25 SanDisk player or iPhone.

Disappointing? Yes. But, as one other poster put it, definitely a first world problem.

Bill
