Replacing the Sparks Plugs...

That's right. The SplitFire. Anyone used that?
My guess is that if the air/fuel mixture is correct, the difference between small spark, and big spark is not that significant. More spark may do nothing to MPG. This new Pulse Plug could fall into the same hype.

Ok, I guess I will get burned but I will try the spark plug change... I read this whole post and we only have speculations and no actual testing. No one has taken the spark plugs out and check their deterioration?

Personally my wife CX-9 '08 have been super good besides the SUPER crappy winter OEM tires and original battery died. I have the same random quick "ping" while driving it.

I will try getting photos of the OEM plugs and report on the behavior after changing the spark plugs.

Wow! Almost a year after, I revisit my same post about the CX-9 ping..... Well, here is an update as I changed the spark plugs yesterday and so far the SUV is running very nice! I will try to get some photos of the old plugs to help here....

So, here is a short story...

PROBLEM:
- The wife SUV pinging got super bad! Like engine light on and sometimes flashing due to misfires.
- While driving it, I had to pull over shut off the vehicle and wait a minute to see if the car will start ok for driving back. (Trick works, don't abuse.)
- If this is your case and the SUV has over 100k miles and spark plugs have not been change.. you should definitely do it!

WORK: (2/5) <-- is just time consuming
Day 1:
- Use some Seafoam in oil and gas according to directions in can
- ** If you know how to.. seafoam the intake by injection.. <-- not required
- Run vehicle to clean up with seafoam

Day 2:
- Change the x6 spark plugs
- Change oil and put new gas

INSTRUCTIONS
- Here is a site explaing what is needed
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123773226-How-to-get-to-the-spark-plugs

- In super summary for people use to work in cars:
+ Pay attention to the plenum (air box connecting to intake manifold).
+ Take bolts little by little pretty obvious and you will feel it get loose
+ ATTENTION to sensor in back of plenum and back bolt
+ The plenum has some GASKETS so you might want to change those. I didn't have them at that time.
+ Specs: Plugs at 15Nm and bolts at 7Nm
+ Spark Plugs gap: I used .55 on mine

FINDINGS:
- So as I did this work I found the following details interesting...
- Intake seems to have collected some carbon build up at 100k. Little but more than my A4 for sure at 160k.
- Spark plug had different gappings from OEM and the vary from .53 to .61, and that's quite a big difference.
+ Very interesting was that the ones gap higher to ~.60 where the most wet and damage.
+ Others at ~.55 look almost new.. which in my head seems to make sense since they will fire sooner.
- Throttle body in my car was missing the bolt that will hold it in place.
+ I can imagine the throttle body bouncing and hitting the lower metal bracket which I wonder if it damages it as some reports I have seen for the CX-9

Hope this help others.

FYI - I am not an certified mechanic or anything. Just a street modder who loves playing [:)]
