your going to get a dsm and you are trying to buy a car that doesn't brake? hahaha gluck with that one dude, i bet it will be non-working more then it runs if you start doing work to it.
(rofl2) So true!!

There is a lockout, preventing automatic trannies from accidentially being put in reverse, and then the tranny going into reverse. I saw a Caddy that was knocked into reverse by some guy's little dog bumping it. Then the tranny went into reverse, and it took. tranny parts everywhere. As for how it would "slipp into reverse", was that on its own? If so, I totally agree the car is a lemon.

Anyway, I feel sorry you had such a bad time with your P5. I came from a 2000 GMC Sonoma that was in the dealer 17 times in a year for the seats sliding into the dash when braking. They replaced the seat fram 10 times, and rigged it the rest. Since it was used, no lemon law. The last time they "fixed" it, I filed the 3rd complaint with NHTSA (lots of similiar complaints), the 16th with GM, and then traded the hunk of s*** in for a P5 and a B3000. I have had pretty good success with my Mazdas. I know the truck is a Ranger, but it has a better warranty. That said about my lemon problems, I highly doubt you would trade for another Mazda. With my GMC experience, I will never own one again.

If you are looking for reliability, get a Honda, Nissan or Toyota. That is my recommendation. Mazda is very reliable in my eyes, but I have not had the bad experience you have had. If you feel like hanging out at the dealer all day, go grab yourself a GMC.

Hey now, Don't take it out on all GMC's. The Sonoma was a piece of s*** truck. Every model year of this generation of production they've all had insanely idiotic problems. My friends 03 had a ******* wheel fall off! And all the lug nuts were still on it, the front left wheel assembly (brakes, suspension, everything) just fell off one day. No wierd sounds beforehand, nothing.

But now the same guy has a Sierra and the things a champ. Never a single problem except a coolant line seperated, but I think that's more from his driving habits than a manufacturer error. GMC's are my favorite big trucks by far. They and the new f-150's are the only ones I would ever drive.

lol. yeah i know the problem w/ the DSM's. but i cant say no to an amazing powerplant. you can make 350WHP on pump gas, as a daily driver, and thats without even rebuilding the block.
im curently in the prosses of getting my ASE, so im sure i can handle the problems.

Out of curiosity on the way to work this morning I tried to shift from 5th to reverse. Now my transmission is ruined! (argh) Curse you Peabody!!!

Haha, no, not really. But I did sit in my driveway and try it. I suppose if you let the shifter slip all the way to center neutral, you can THEN go to reverse. But straight down from 5th? Not on my car. Maybe the lockout's only for stupid Americans like me? (uhm) Or maybe it only works at speed. I'm not that curious.

I think a lot of people here, like me, are wondering how in the hell someone could "accidentally" do this. Seriously, does the thing pop out of gear and hit reverse while being driven or something??

My lockout isnt there. I am not really concerned about it.
i don't think a lockout is really necessary anyways. your transmission won't let you put it into reverse without a lot of effort and a lot of grinding. if you try all it should do is grind a little bit, then you should say "hey i'm trying to put it in reverse while moving forward, better stop trying that." i'm guessing his problems are a bit more than just he can grind his gears if he tries to put it in reverse while moving forward

Reverse gear is handled by a small idler gear (purple). At all times, the blue reverse gear in this diagram is turning in a direction opposite to all of the other blue gears. Therefore, it would be impossible to throw the transmission into reverse while the car is moving forward -- the dog teeth would never engage. However, they will make a lot of noise!

wow this thread is funny and i find it a lil hard as well for you to be driving and for your car to just go from 5th to reverse.... maybe pop out of gear sure but to pop out and then randomly pop into reverse.... i don know but hey whatever... sexy wagon 6 cept for rims and front grille and such

true it is a little bigger car (the p5 wasn't exactly a small car though), but the extra 100hp makes it way more fun :) i drove a gt limited a few weeks ago, very nice, very torquey, def. a good car all around. it comes standard with a lot more things that a 2.5rs, so you're gonna get more for your money, but it is still going to be more expensive. they're doing low interest financing now, at least in the US, but the 2.5rs probably has the same thing, and you can probably get either for invoice. i'd at least give one a test drive while you're checking out the 2.5rs :) or maybe a forester xt, same basic 2.5l turbo motor, a little less power, but the utility of the 4 door, and a bit cheaper, still more than an impreza though.
i can't really think of any other cars in your price range that are fun to drive, so i'd probably say the impreza from the given choices if you want to stay with a new car :)

actually the only subie faster than the forester turbo is the sti.....just thought you should know.

Wow those are some badass 6's.

how can you say that.....the wheels on the white one nearly made me puke. the blue one had a bad fitting hood...did you see the gaps. also the body kit was blah. to each his own i guess.

i think he is saying that when downshifting from 5th to 4th the tranny plops into reverse instead of bypassing it.....thats my take on this whole thing. if thats not the case then i don't know what to say but why would you even try going from 5th to reverse unless you are at a complete standstill.

this still wouldnt make sense to me, this just makes it sound like he cant find 4th... and that would just be sad bu there is no way just just plops into lol

yea. besides, he specifcally said HE tried and "anyone" who TRIES it works. who the **** TRIES to shift into reverse while moving?

Guys, he didn't say his trannies died because he tried shifting from 5th to reverse. He's only saying that there SHOULD be a lock to prevent "accidental" shifts to reverse from 5th (eg. if you have pets jumping around in the car or you have a drunk friend in the passenger seat trying to help you shift or just a lady friend admiring and playing with your knob - shift knob, ahem). It's a "feature". He simply just TRIED the "feature" and it wasn't there or not functioning. Yes, it's a feature that you shouldn't need to use, but it's there and he merely tested it.

And about the POS thing. We're all entitled to our opinions. And really if you have THAT much trouble with a car, you would say something similar as well. We should give him the benefit of the doubt that he was unlucky and got a lemon (there are lemons in every make and models) and Mazda replaced his tranny with bad remanufactured parts. Yes, Mazda does not guarantee that they will give you a brand new tranny when they do the replacement.

well i do not know nor will i ever know if i have a lock going to reverse.... all 5 of my cars have been stick and ive never ran into a problem where i accidently try to go to reverse or nething for that matter..... and as for drunk ppl in the car, i guess i dont hang out with crazy drunks...
but none the less your right we should give him the benifet of the doubt that 4 trannies were bad and not his driving ability

Yes, while it may seem it's highly unlikely that 4 trannies were all bad, but some people just have that luck. Heck, if people can win the Powerball/Lottery and win several hundred million dollars with one ticket or hit a hole-in-one in golf and win a Mercedes Benz, what's "highly unlikely"? :)

For the others, just thank the car gods that you got a good one and keep lovin it :D

what does the forester xt run in the quarter? it gives up 40hp and 15lbft of torque to the legacy gt and weights only 75lbs less. i know last year before the redesign of the legacy what you said was true, i'm not so sure it holds true anymore. off to research
