regular, midgrade, or premium?

that sucks..my 94 sentra used to get crazy mileage...like 40+mi/gal...my mom still drives it, she loves it...never a single problems...gas, oil, washer fluid is the only stuff its ever needed (and I'm sure some other misc. items:) but nothing major, ever)

I use 91 or 93. I think my first fillup was 87 until I read the book and came here :D. 87 won't hurt a thing. I believe the book says that less than 91 will result in reduced performance. I believe it will just retard the timing a bit. I'd be interested in a dyno run on the two types.

I just got my MP3 about 2 months (used 2001 blue) back and was curious about this myself. I tried 3 fillups in a row of a tank full of 87 to see if there was any difference in the performance or knocking. I didn't hear any knocking, but the performance definitely suffered. I'm not sure about the -10 hp loss - that seems a bit much. But every little bit counts, so I'm back to using 91 at $2.09 in southern Cali.
BTW it's my baby's birthday today. She rolled off the production line 02/27/01.

Hey where'd you find that info at? Is it in a door jam? I'll have to look. Did you buy it something nice? What, you didn't? You bastard. You don't deserve her!!!

Just kidding.

I got the info the same as getting the production number. Mazda's got it. Just ask 'em for the production date.

ohh, i didn't think of that. My door say 04/01 but not a specific day that's why I was wondering. I got my production number but din't think to ask for the date. Thanks man.

Well, i use nothing but premium (octane 91) but is it ever damn expensive up her....i think i pay something like 86 cents/litre....thats like $3.20/ gallon!:wtf:

Man, you guys in the peg are really getting beaten down, cold and pricey..

I try to use premium, but sometimes I let it slip. 72.9 cents/liter for the good stuff in Calgary 1st of March.

I use 87 (manual RECOMMENDS premium but not necessary) because I'm cheap. I up premium on special occasions. No problems. It's not the fastest straight-line car in the world anyway, I got it for the handling.

87 gas here in Dallas is $1.55-1.60 last time I filled up. I use the CRX a lot now cuz it gets 30 mpg in the city. :)

Heres a little update on how well my MP3 is running since the switch back to 91 octane.

Ive been running on 91 for 3 tanks now and either I've gotten used to driving an actual car or the performance has declined. So yesterday I decided to reset my ECU. Then I did a little conservative driving. During the first trip, at idle the engine seemed to want to stall. After a day of regular driving, I noticed that the idle was smoother than before the reset. Its easier to put it in to 1st at low speeds. While driving at varying speeds under 10 mph, it doesnt jump. The engine felt and sounded smoother across all rpms. The engine sounded less rough and quieter. Starting up in the mornings and in general is better, easier. It doesnt seem any faster. In fact, it seems less torque-y. But the engine sounds and feels more comfortable especially in the high rpms.

I have to admit that I thought that the whole reset the ECU was b.s. But I like the way its been running so far.
This may also completely change the characteristics for those who only run strictly 87 or 89. If anyone running 87 or 89 can test it and let me know, thatd be great. And if you could come in on Sunday, too. Yeah, thanks.

- For those who want to know how, but dont want to search the boards lazy bastards, all you have to do is disconnect the negative terminal connector for while I did it for a minute. This resets the ECU & the radio & any other electronics. Then I let it idle for about 10 minutes.

I have been filling up with 87 grade as well. After reading this I guess I should stop being cheap and put 91, and see how much of a difference it makes. Hell anything to help my baby to run better. :D

I have always used premium (91 octane) except when visiting in-laws (their town has 87 octane only).
We pay $0.939/L for premium.

when you dont use the 91 suggested you will get that nasty catalytic converter smell the one that smells like crap im sure you know what im talking about trust me stick with 91 not only did i tried using 87 and 89 both made that smell consant at least 3 to 4 times a day and now with 91 i hardely ever smell it plus it is also said that you can hurt your injectors with anything more or less than recomended

i dont mean to brag again, but i just filled up with 98 RON unleaded for US$1.90

i live in australia and that's readily available unleaded :)
