rebuild a FS engine

So, here it is:

Is it possible to rebuild a standard FS engine (Ford Probe) to a FS-DE engine?
The goal is to end up with a turbo engine.

What I already know:
Cams from FS01 to FSD7
Hydraulic lifters to solid lifters: Is it possible to re-use the head and drop the DE parts right in?
VICS and VTCS: not important
Engine electronics: stand alone system
Change the injectors to higher flow rate type

Does the FS have the oil-squirters?

without knowing much about the FS, i would be surprised if it had oil squirters... i dont think the FSDE did until the later years. and sub.

Yeah the FSDE does have squirters, I had to buy new ones at the dealer 20$ each when I rebuilt mine.

the fs-de engine has never been sold in Belgium, only the FS in Probes / 626.

The only solution is the convert a FS to a FS-DE.

Any tips on that?

Can I use MX-6/Ford Probe engine parts for my Proteg?
None of the 1st generation MX-6/Probe engine parts are interchangable with any Proteg. Only the 2nd generation base model MX-6/Probe engine parts will work with the 3rd generation 1.8l/2.0l models. The cylinder head from the MX-6/Probe is not directly interchangable with the Proteg 's due to the fact that there is a hole to mount a distributor on the MX-6/Probe but not on the Proteg. It is not advisible to use stock components from the MX-6/Probe's engine because many of the Proteg's parts supercede them with stronger/updated versions. Only aftermarket performance parts are advisible.

3rd generation:
Any ZL (1.5l) botom end parts will work with the 1.6l (ZM-DE) engine.
The ZL-VE head (which has S-VT) is a direct swap to the ZM-DE engine. You will
need to figure out a way to control the hydraulic controller that varies the intake cam
timing. This system is similar to the one used in the 2001+ Miata BP-VE engines, so
talk to the Miata guys about it the S-VT on their cars to learn more.
Any ZL-DE top end parts will work with the ZM-DE engine.
European spec ZM-DE 9.4:1 pistons are also available:
ZMY1-11-SA0A normal size
ZMY1-11-SB0A .025 oversize
ZMY1-11-SBXA .050 oversize
Most FP and FS engine parts are interchangable.
As for FS-DE 9.7:1 (9.1:1 when used with FP-DE) pistons:
FPY1-11-SA0E normal size
FPY1-11-SB0E .025 oversize
FPY1-11-SBXE .050 oversize
As for FS-ZE 10.4:1 (9.7:1 when used with FP-DE) pistons:
FPY2-11-SA0B normal size
FPY2-11-SB0B .025 oversize
FPY2-11-SBXB .050 oversize
As for FS-ZE 10.7:1 pistons from the MazdaSpeed Familia:
FSY4-11-SA0 normal size
FSY4-11-SB0 .025 oversize
FSY4-11-SBX .050 oversize

ok, the fs02 in my car, 1995 ford probe, is alike the msp in a few ways, yet different in other. I have HLAs and cams that are designed to be used with the HLAs as you all have SLAs. The parts will interchange between the different heads without any problems. You can always put a freeze plug in the hole where the distributor gos in the head. The intake manifolds we have flow better and we do not have any sort of VICS or VTCS. Also the oil squirters were not added until the later years as bryan (yudkib) has said above. I am building a all forged motor for my probe as we speak. I am switching to coil pack ignition (EDIS4) and using megasquirt to control it. Another important thing to know is the crankshaft in the fs02 does not have a forged crank, they were added in the later years. i hope this helps you out man,

I've contacted some Mazda dealers about the parts needed to perform a FS02 to a FSDE.
I was told that there were no parts lists available because there was never a FSDE sold in Belgium.

With the right part numbers they could try to force something.

So, is it possible to give me some part numbers, or a link to them?
For the conversion HLA to SLA:
The intake and exhaust cam, also all the other SLA parts, springs, etc

Engine internals:
Is it nessesary to change rods and pistons?
I will re-use the crank but let it balanced if the rods and pistons have to go.

thx

Ford probe's crank is not forged, Protege's are forged. Which is needed for turbo to handle more stress. 626's are forged aswell, well some are I'm not sure of all of them are or not.

haha, yea in 98 they made all the big changes such as different ignition, forged crank, and the conversion to the SLAs. if i could find one of these motors, i would be in heaven so i can finish my build

actually, in 93 mazda used a forged crank in the FS. I pulled a motor not too long ago out of a 93 probe in the junk yard and it had a forged crank wit the same stamp code as on a protege and it had piston squirters.

you probably pulled a rebuilt motor.

Still in search for the partnumbers for the hla to sla conversion.

Is there a link to them?

Would those from an 1.8 litre engine fit?

Is the head of the 1.8 FP engine the same as the 2.0 FS?

Maybe is that the way to get those parts?

The FP has a more conservative grind. Great if you're trying to save gas, not so great for performance.
