Rear Licence Plate "FIX"

Finally got around to doing this myself, and the results are good.

However, the black plastic license plate mounting bracket is only attached at the top (see photo), so now the plate and bracket both vibrate as one piece when the hatch is closed.

How to fix the bracket to the hatch at the bottom? Some kind of adhesive or double-sided tape?

wasnt the fix supposed to be for the plate and the black plate holder to be screwed to the hatch it self so it doesnt vibrate like it does?

i dont have a frame around mine, and it sits flush against the body. if its legal in your area, attach some suction cups to the plate and stick it in your back window. but only if its legal. i dont want yall comin back and gettin mad at me cuz you got a ticket.

how did you remove the black frame? I want it gone, it looks so much cleaner sitting on the body like on my MSP

oh im sorry, i meant i dont have one of those plastic frames that usually come from the dealership around my plate. im off all day, ill take a look at it if i can. ill figure out how to take it off. but i think the rattle will be worse since its gonna be metal on metal.

I hope not. Simply drilling holes in your sheetmetal will invite rust. There must be some way of attaching, I'm just wondering if anyone has a tried and true method. If not I'll just make something up--but it won't involve my drill.

negative there is an easy fix for that....duct tape a peice of carpet etc to the bottom part of the license plate and attach w/ the top 2 screws....I've had it like this on my MSP forever...no rattle

ahh, genius. id be worried about the carpet getting wet then moldy especially down in my area. it gets pretty humid on the gulf coast, what with all the hurricanes and all.

When I did this "mod," I got a whole new rear plate holder/bracket from the dealer (direct from Japan, hehe). So the new holder had much bigger rubber "bumpers" on the bottom, so it actually works really well. The holder I had initially barely had any rubber thingys at all.

I think this part might have been revised to add more rubber on the bottom so that it doesn't rattle so much against the hatch.

I have *never* owned a car that used more than 2 screws to hold the plate on.
I think if this really worries you, then you must not have enoough real stress in your life, lol. (ughdance)
hell, my 4Runner currently has 1 screw holding the plate on, which I bummed from a buddy's car the day I bought it so I could drive home. Just this evening I had to straighten it.

more seriously - there is an even easier solutioin. just put some velcro onto the bottom back of the plate, other side of said velcro on hatch. Done, no rattles. In fact if you get Industrial Strength, you can even remove the top two screws for a nice "clean" look. My buddy has done this for many years (hm since I stole his screw, hahaha)

The beauty of velcro is that it is especially resistant to shearing/lateral force. Another fault of tape.

If your registration sticker goes on the front, I don't see how it would be a problem. Double sided tape on the back without removing both sides (side towards car is still covered). I guess I did a bad job of explaining what I meant . If you get the padded, thick kind of tape it will provide a barrier between the plate and your car. Just stick it on the back of the plate. It'll work if you clean your plate off before you put it on. It's better than using dynamat or sticking anything on your paint.

I haven't tried it myself seeing as it only rattles when I shut my hatch so I really haven't cared that much. But, I don't see why it won't work and for those of you that have a sub or 8, it might keep it from annoying other people around you.

I put some double stick rubber-like tape on there and its worked great for about a year. I am going to be doing alot of body work similar to cable43 and one of the things I am going to have them do is fill the old license plate holes and redrill new ones the way it should have been done right, without the black bracket.
