I was wondering this too. Does it just put a fog bulb in place of the reverse light? Brighter reverse lights would sure help me out with my 5% tint

Because...it helps you be seen in heavy fog...and it lights up behind you a little bit...IT WORKS! Trust me. It's on my mom's volvo.

i just found this...
The rear fog light or lights are to be used under adverse weather conditions such as fog, heavy snow or rain, and provides a significant protection against rear end crashes.
is this right???
(hmm) (uhm) (hmm)

yeah, it uses one of the brake lights as the rear fog. basically, all it does is it stays illuminated so that drivers behind you can see where you are in thick fog as to not run too close to your butt only to see you when it's too late. it works.

mine doesn't use a brake light, it's its own bulb. Actually two, but many of the systems have just one rear fog light.

The fog light is brighter than your standard light, and is seen MUCH more easily through rain / snow / fog... if you've ever seen a car disappear on a very rainy day you'll know what I mean.

it's kinda like highbeams for the rear. my parents vulva had them also. it was good to use when people tailgated too close since there's hardly fog in san diego

My C230k had a rear foglight. It was located on the drivers side only. When activated it would make the drivers side tail light brighter so that it could be seen better. You could definately tell when it was on. It would give the tail light a more intense and pinkish hue.

it's also used for those assholes who use those highbeams that are behind you. You can flash them and tell them to turn their highbeams off. And yeah, also for the tailgaters in the heavy fog.

I don't know what you are talking about vindication and mountjonas. My rear foglight was only a bit more noticeable then the other tail light. It's just a bit brighter, not much at all, and stands out slightly in severe fog. Rear foglights are nowhere near being as bright as front fog lights. I doubt that highbeam using assholes would even know that you were doing anything by turning them on and off.

Of course ricers use their rear fogs for when they back in to their parking spots in severe conditions ;).

I had a rear fog on my Audi that I used all the time in the fog/rain/snow.

The biggest problem around here is there are TONS of people that have them and don't know it.I can't even count the number of times I've said "Your rear fog light is on" and got the response "My what?". They turn them on with the regular fogs, which people love to have on for no reason, and they don't realize they are irritating the other drivers behind them.

That is correct....they are super bright, brighter than your brake lights, and are designed to help other drivers see you. In europe their fog problem is much worse than it is here in the states (except for a few places, or on specific occasions) so thats why Audis and other european cars have them.

My friend uses them on his Audi to ward off tailgaters.

One thing I used to hate about the rear fog light on my Audi A4 is that people would think I have a burnt out taillight since most, acutally all, rear fog lights are only in the left rear taillight.

It's actually US law that you are only allowed to have one rear-fog, it has to be on the drivers side so as not to be confused with brake lights. Most manufacturers use the same bulb size as brake lights, which is why many of you think they are the same (they are in your case) You find these a lot on European cars where they have lots of fog. Like someone mentioned, 90% of people who have them don't know what they are for, so they just turn the switch on and leave it. Super annoying.
