Real-world gas mileage in the 3

400 miles on full tank? (omg)
Are you serious? I just drove 950 miles and was getting 310 before the light came on. Can the car differ that much? Do you have 2.0 engine? If so, again, would they differ that much?

How fast are you driving? The mileage drops off severely if you continuously spin the motor over 3500 rpm (75mph in the manual). I'm pulling about 360 between fill-ups with 75% highway driving.

I average just over 25 but it's a lot of city driving. I have a hard time driving slow in this car too. Some of my Highway driving has been in wide open country (eastern Washington & Montana) where 75 is sloooowwww. My mileage is starting to get a bit better overall though.

mileage

I just calculated my mileage from a tank that took me from Raleigh to Greensboro then to Charlotte and back to Greensboro. A total of 378 miles. 70% of it Highway, 30% in town and I got for the first time an incredible 33.15 m.p.g average for that tank.(bowdown) It was with a combination of the A/C being used on the highway and not in the city. But most of the time I have been averaging a respectable 28-31 m.p.g. I have the 5 speed 2.3 5-door.

the average is increasing

5-door (2.3 litre) manual

after about 10 fillups I did an average of all my mileage to date, I got about 26.145.

It seems to have been increasing as I slam it around less and get used to only going about 77 on the highways... I got a record 33.079 on one of my durham <-> atlanta trips.

otherwise, more details are in my geeky mileage thread

my mileage thread has grown

:D i always get around 20-22 MPG but that is because i installed a new muffler and removed the resonator sooo i keep driving hard :D

Peteyboy3k - enjoyed seeing the geeky mileage thread. Here's my geeky mileage chart.
my mileage
From the beginning I wrote the odo miles on the reciepts and saved them. The other week I started putting them into this spreadsheet. Now I'm driving a little gentler to see if I can get better mileage. I was gentle during the break in period but mileage wasn't all that hot. Maybe cause it was break in I don't know. I have another trip coming up in a couple weeks that I'd like to see if I can get 30 or more on the highway, then after it will be back to a lot of city driving and I'd like to see if I can get more than 25 for that.

Of all you guys, I am getting the shittiest mileage, even worst since they replaced the fuel pump. I get around 250-300 kilometers per tank, miixed city/highway driving. And I got 11,500 kilometers on my car now

How is that stupid? Sounds correct to me. Radar or light for that matter is not relative, so if you're thinking the plane's speed threw the reading off, then you are wrong.

Usually they don't even use radar from planes. There are markings on the road at specific distances and they just time you as you drive between them.

At least that's how they used to do it.

yep still is..come here and it's all cameras every so many miles.

yeah i know they dont use radar, when they gave me the ticket they also gave a card sayin how they got me. they fly a plane a half a mile up and use "calibrated" stop watches and time me from one point to another and they put that into some math formula and get my speed. the part thats stupid is how do they know that the cop on the ground pulled over the right car???? the plane from a half mile up cant se that its a blue mazda3, and the cop even told me that. i asked the cop if the plane told him that a blue mazda3 was goin 95 and he said no he just told us a blue car, well how many blue cars are there on the highways???? alot. PLUS i had just got back on the eway after gettin gas, i got on and not more then 2 minutes later they pulled me over. god damn ohio cops, thats gonna put 6 points on my lisence

Sounds like you have grounds to fight it.

I don't know how it works down there, but to fight it here you have to return to the courthouse closest to (generally) where you got the ticket. On a long trip, that is quite often too prohibitive to do, and most people end up paying the tickets.

I know I'm not gonna lose work for a day or more, possibly have to pay for accommodations, food, gas, etc for a hundred bucks.

Sure... $100 for the fine but how much in increased insurance premiums over the next 5-10 years?

True enough - In B.C. we have 'public'/monopolised insurance (Insurance Corp. of British Columbia). Our rates are based on your vehicle and accident record only - the driving record is not taken into account. We have a points system, whereas we buy back the points we lose. That could be anywhere from $0-$480 per point, depending on how many tickets you get in a 1 year period. Most tickets are worth 3 points, meaning you can get about 1 per year without additional penaties.

I, however not proud of this fact, have shelled out more than $16,000 in fines/points, and dealt with multuple suspensions due to infractions. While this is improving (they've beat me into submission), I've never caused an accident.

This public service advisory has been apart of my community service sentence ;) J/K

do u really think i can fight that ticket? everyone has been tellin me that ohio cops/judges are dickheads and that ill loose. then if i loose not only did i waste the gas goin down there, but i also have to pay court costs. its not that far luckily, its only about 120 miles, so two hours away. i could pay the ticket no problem its the points on my lisence that im worried about. my job requires that i have a good driving record cuz i drive all day, plus i already pay $260 a month in insurance, i cant imagine how much its gonna go up once i get 6 points. sorry ta change the topic of this thread but i need info about this so i know what to do b4 i get my lisence suspendid.
