Razzle Frazzle *$?#@!&!^

I am pissed. After typing up my message about tiny paint chips coming off my wheel it just seems so miniscule. I reluctantly went to a bar after work for a few beers and a few games of darts. When I parked at the bar, I parked at one of those spaces that had a curb on one side. I figured I'd get closer to the curb, but far away from others for door dings. There was some snow accumulating here in Madison, and I scraped the hell out of my right front rim. There is a long scratch right next to the tire extending about 1/8th of the wheel. I did the same thing last year, but its hardly noticable (about a inch long). So now my rim has two scratches on it (thankfully just the one rim since I rotated my tires)....

I'm wondering what I should do. Should i just forget about it since its not terribly noticeable (to me its horrible of course)? Should I get it refinished? Should I buy a new rim?

I'm worried about paint further coming off since the finish is ruined on that portion. How much does it typically cost to get a rim refinished? How is the quality of such a job? Do I need paint codes from Racing Hart to match the others? Otherwise, how much is a new rim? I suppose if I buy a new one, I get a full size spare...

Help guys! I need you! ;)

If ya just want a new rim, go to mazdastuff.com only $270.00
Tire is not included.

After thinking about this all night, is it possible for me to wet sand this thing down and buy some kind of closely matching paint and clear coat? Or is this something pros have to do. Can refinishers just do touch-up work, or do they have to do the whole thing?

yes you could do just as you described....its just a matter of how close you can match the colors.....of course now you are talking paint...and your rims are in fact powder coated....which is much more durable than conventional paint....its YOUR ride......do as you see fit.

as far as having a powder coater completely redo the rim....it will probably NOT exactly match the others....then you have a similar porblem of the color not being right and YOU would notice it...

Thanks Sir Nuke for the excellent information. I'm leaning toward buying a new wheel (or used if its in good shape). At least I get a a full-sized spare out of it though. I'll just live with it for a couple of months until I can afford the $270 + S&H + mounting + balancing.

Does anybody know what the taped-on weight-looking things are on our rims? Are they for balancing? I ask because the inside of the rims (not facing us) have balancing weights on them also...

Chris

I can only assume that they are balance weights.....maybe they needed to put a specific amount of weight in that specific area to balance your wheel/tire and didn't have the proper clip on weight...so they used the tape type...I have seen that done before.

also....I am going to assume you have a MP-3, considering this is the MP-3 section.....so let me ask....will a full sized spare fit in the spot for your spare?

Just asking for I have a P-5 and I know that nothing bigger than the space saver will fit in the spare tire well.......just something to think about.

Yep, I'm a MP3er :). As for the full-size fitting. I do not know! Thats a fabulous question. I hope its not big enough only for the donut. Anybody else have an answer? Does a Racing Hart 17" fit in the spare compartment? Thanks!

Chris

I work in a bodyshop and so for anyone who wants to know: yes you can have a wheel repolished buy a proffessional shop. We regularely send wheels to be repolished. We even did two Honda S2000 wheels last month.
The finish will be identical and it is between 85 and 100$ per wheel over here in Canada. The finish is a powder clear coat and it is baked all night long. Looks and lasts as long as a brand new one!:D

Where in Montreal can I have a wheel refinished ? I've drop it while changing a flat tire...

Thanks

The most Reputable Shop around Montreal is P.Jacques in calixa Lavale. He does wheel refenishing only. This is where we send our mags to be refinished.;)
Where exactly do you live?

I may be selling my stock rims soon if you're interested in buying one or all of them. THey have 3K miles on them.
