Rally2003's Build Thread

If stock brake calipers/rotors are good enough for Mr. Brees they're good enough me. ;)

It may be good enough, but ideal? I don't think so. AAC's kit is amazing and is loads better than stock. I can only imagine what dual masters and 11.75 rears will be like. I agree with you though, it's a bit over kill and the rotors do weight more. May be something like the Reidspeed BBK? Mike has the kit on his mx-6, pedal feels like stock and it bits hard with some good pads

I don't want to crap up Corey's thread, and I'm no expert or race car driver but $900 for front brakes is silly.

Again, I never raced my silver P5 but just with upgraded pads, lines and Brembo blanks that thing had amazing brakes. Honestly, I think a lot of the BBK are sold for bling factor behind the wheels. Sure bigger may be better but at that cost, I just don't see it.

No offense to you or Adam, of course. :)

we'll have to find out this year at TEA what benefits they have.

Looking forward to comparing our times, my friend. :D

Of course, Corey is going to whoop us all. Even in a stock Protege he could smoke us...

According to his site, yes. I don't know him or anything, just stalk him on the forums.

Oh come on, I've even been to your house (well garage at least).
I still use 15x8 wheels with 225 Hoosiers. I use stock brakes because the shorter diameter tire gives me SO much better gearing than the 17 inch wheels with the same sidewall. For track I would love to have the luxury of larger brakes but since I am just doing a few hot laps at a time I can get away with the stock size. For autocross the best plan is to run the lightest brakes you can while still having sufficient braking. Because the runs are so short you don't need the massive heat sink that cars running a 30+ minute race need. Also, because autocross is at such low speeds it would actually make it too easy to lock up and you would lose a lot of the modulation of the brakes unless you used a less agressive pad and at that point it would just turn the big brakes into blingy ballast.

No offence taken. I didn't pay anywhere near gb cost, and I'm more than happy with what I got vs what I paid. May be that's why I value it more. When I completed my 5+lug swap I was super impressed with the p5s braking abilities even with hawk pads and corksport lines. Then when I upgraded again and it was a whole nother ball game. And I'd do it all again... Just my opinion.

I just have a little bit more experience that's all. You guys should have been there when A.J. was running his mouth about me in my friends automatic stock mazda6 (full interior) with my Hankooks and I beat him with his empty enterior, Ksports, and low boost SC. Good Times :) I think he was a little pissed about that. You guys will get there. Just takes more wheel time, walk throughs, prep, and planning. My friend Hunter and 2 others ran with me on one of my last runs of the year and he said he couldn't believe how much grip my MSP had with 4 people in it and still beat the times with his M3. They're all beefing up their cars this year so it sould be interesting on the times for next year.

Also Evan you will be running in XP because of your motor swap from a different car platform. Good luck with that :) but it will still be a cool car.

This is why I went with really good pads and above normal rotors. Everyone that I've seen that get bbk for there street cars for autoX lock up there brakes when in tight turns with a rapid decrease in acceleration. Like he said, you would have to run a less better pad which would defeat the whole bbk. They are more for curcuit and runs with a higher rate of speed. A little over kill for 70-80mph runs on a autoX course. They benefit way more on road courses like mid-ohio. It would be cool to see and compare sutoX times with Bill at an event though.

Hopefully we can get a few more guys out this year for a Mazda meet/autoX event at TEA.

Don't worry Evan... if my plans for the Civic ever follow through, I'll be with you for the same reason.

Suspension, wheels and tires, and some other bits. Really don't want to use the MSM for anything more than Auto-X. Read: Rare and expensive to fix.

I'll text you and give you a heads up later.

Sounds good Phen.

Hoping to get the broken turbo studs out this weekend and get close to finishing the wire sorting. I'm going to have to make a pre-season autoX to-do list to keep me on track.

Made my list, but all the cf stuff is subject to change. Just depends on funding and how serious the MSP gets :)

Removal
Air bags
Stereo
Speakers
? rear seats
? rear hardware

Maintenance
Front wheel bearings
PS pump
Front windshield
Small wire tuck

Mods
POPE DP
AWR passenger side mount
AWR drivers side mount
CF fenders
CF front bumper
CF splitter
CF side skirts
? CF doors
CF Diffuser
CF Wing
CF Trunk
17x9 +22 Enkei RPF1 front 3797906522SP 16.35lbs
17x7.5 +48 Enkei RPF1 rear 3797756548SP 15.25lbs
245/40/17 Hankook Ventus Z214
225/45/17 Hankook Ventus Z214
3 point strut tower brace
Light weight battery
OBX crank pulley
PS pulley

Hopefully all the list will be done before the 1st autoX. The doors wil be the deal breaker because of how complex it would be to make them. I would basically have to make 2 molds per door (inner and outer) for every door. 8 molds is a lot of time and money for an est. 40lbs.

rear seats are easy, have you thought about relocating the battery?

I like being able to have the capability of having a full car for s**** and giggles on my first runs, but will probably take them out when the season comes closer. I wanted to relocate the battery at first, but you just add more weight when adding the extra feet of cable. I think I'm just going to get a 12lb battery in the Optima's place. If I was running the Optima all the time I would for sure relocate the +35lb brick.

redistribution of weight on other cars might be a big factor but the MSP is pretty close to 50/50 so understandable. The bottom of the rear seat just pulls out. Nothing special holding in in but it weights maybe a couple pounds.

I've pulled the bottom of the rear seats before, but have never unbolted the rear backs that fold down. That is where the weight is at, not much though.

Forgot to add to the list:
-Remove badges
-Buy new head lamps

Just purchased 2 17x9 +22 Enkei RPF1's forthe front :) BRC!
Can't wait to start forming the front fenders. Still undecided for what size wheels and tires to run in the rear.
