Quieter Exhaust

Wow, I'm sorry I was so slow in finding this thread. There are, indeed, a lot of us here who enjoy high performance and do not think drone is good.

The drone and total volume went up a good bit when I decided to go with catless DP/RP. Look at my sig. I can tell you that the 3 inch Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator is the real deal. This will help a lot. I'm as quiet or quieter than stock, and the drone is tamed, so if you still have your stock dp and second cat, this should really help with the drone. I put mine in the middle of the test pipe where the second cat used to be. You can put it just about anywhere behind your last cat, if any, and get the same result.

Note: We have a 2.8 inch exhaust system, so you will need to neck up to 3 inches to keep from losing flow. A good muffler shop should be able to install it for very little. These resos are a straight through design, so there is no power loss if pipe diameter is maintained.

Here is what I am tallking about:

Drone induced headache gets old fast. It's a cheap fix. It's fun to be stealthy fast.

Thank you for the feedback and the link, very much appreciated!

cool post MSM3...

so much more helpful than 'you bought the wrong car'.... :)

this car's louder exhaust is appealing, and growing on me, even the drone.. but let's face it. that is the way mazda wanted it... why hide it? it is targeted at a specific buyer, and they don't break the bank by putting a lot into the exhaust.. and it helps the car's raw go-cart feel... it's nice being back in a car where i can here the engine all the time.

you don't have to be loud to make power...

they love the benz's here in houston... they are freekin' everywhere.. you would think they have some kind of bulk discount on them or something.. saw a DTM jobby the other day...

a few months ago, i saw a very interesting one at the pump.... big black 4-door AMG... v12 badges... loads of power and doing it quietly... in fact, very quietly... just a hushed rumble.. you had to strain to hear it...

i talked to the very cool older gentleman owner, and he said it is a very impressive car, that he had owned a few, and this was a mean sumbitch, as he put it... said it made 600hp?? (holy cow)

he took off pretty hard in it... and MOOVED OUT, tires barely holding on, he could have smoked them easily, i bet.. or maybe he had his TC on......unreal... with no more noise than a stock GT mustang... in fact, less.

i had to laugh when he told me what it would do to his golf buddy's cadillac...

obviously the creaks and groans and rattles and everything else is the way mazda wanted it. so don't mod your call at all. leave it 100% stock and don't change a single thing.

that means no modding ECU either. or winter tires. or replacement motor mounts. or short throw shifters. or replacement shifter bushings.

Part of my reasoning for the quiet exhaust is observations I've made when going on fun runs with other 928 guys. Many 928 owners have X Pipes and no cats which make them loud as heck. I remember seeing a soccer mom furiously wave her hands at my buddy who was driving behind a school bus and seeing the words slow down mouthed by her. She must have missed the school bus which was keep us at a slow pace. I just don't need or want this kind of attention, not from my neighbors or the local police and I think the MS3 is borderline too loud.

Add to that the droaning and you have a good reason to find an alternative.

I have some great suggestions from a few here which I will be looking into. Hope others can benefit to.

sorry, you lost me with this one....

I actually just installed the HKS CBE, and its much quieter than the stock exhust, But then again, I want it to Growl and howl, so i need to get a DP/RP Combo or a good ol Cobb :)

Its odd that many of the aftermarket exhausts are noted as less noisy than stock. Does anyone have dyno numbers for these aftermarket exhausts? Curious if they change the power/torque curves and make the car less driveable.

Does anyone have experience with the magnaflow exhausts? with how they sound and how much power they will add to your car???

I have experience with Magnaflow exhausts, but on other vehicles. They are very high quality and typically very free-flowing. I know nothing about any CBE they may have for our cars.

The only Magnaflow product I have on my MS3 is the exhaust tip -- I wanted to downsize from our 4 inch tip (kinda ricer to me) to a more stealthy thin-wall stainless 3 1/2 inch tip that almost blends invisibly into the rear valance. It is very high quality and meets my perhaps unique needs.

But, here is the big thing: If you are seeking a power gain with Magnaflow or any other aftermarket CBE exhaust, please know that our CBE is so free flowing from the factory that there are no significant gains to be made unless you have modded your car so that it is capable of producing over 300 whp. The stock exhaust will flow that power level without loss.

As to the sound, you'll have to find sound clips and judge for yourself what sound you like. Change in sound to something you prefer should be your objective unless you are otherwise heavily modded (bigger turbo, etc) and have already addressed the area where the true restriction is -- ahead of the CBE.

To significantly increase flow, the stock DP and the two cats would need to be replaced by a properly designed non-restricive 3 inch DP that is catless or with high flow cats ahead of the CBE.

The question is, did Mazda choose the loud exhaust to reduce backpressure or to save money.

And to the post before this one....(laugh)(laugh)(thumb)

Honestly, I don't think the loud exhaust was "chosen" for either reason.

I think a free flow exhaust was chosen for performance. I think the sound was chosen based on focus group feedback -- the target age group for these cars is probably younger than you and me Metro Gray, and this is probably the sound that was most favored.

Performance was goal 1, marketing was goal 2. But that's just a personal opinion.

I agree.

There are already comments in the automotive journalist circles about how "subdued" the car looks, and I don't think Mazda was really shooting for a "sleeper" in the MS3...it just kinda turned out that way. ;)

You guys all Talk about Loud exhausts... this is whack!.. My Exhaust makes no noise what so ever.. its somewhat disturbing.. perhaps we got different specced vehicles in NZ... i want a loud Factory Zhaust :'(

all i hear in mine is the rushing exhaust gasses when the Wastegate Cracks open.. and all that sounds like from the outside is a air leak..

Well I finally got around to installing the magnaflow 14616 resonator in place of the second stock renonator. There is no more drone! car is much quieter. You can still hear it outside, but its so much quieter inside. I'll post pictures as soon as I can.

Dynomat

IMO, it's not the exhaust that bothers me, it's the road noise. The car being small and economically built just doesn't have the quiet refined cabin I'm used to, but then I've typically driven performance sedans.

My 03 Accord was very nice and worked quite well but when I swapped out a much stiffer suspension, the road noise / vibrations increased. I matted the whole damn car it seemed.

In my case, I sound deadened the floor and then the roof as it was quite lound when raining. Viola. The car was Acura quiet and very noticeably improved. My wife even asked WTF I did. Well worth a few lbs.

I miss that car.
